Steve Mullen March 19th, 2008, 04:01 AM 25 years ago minus one week I too shot your kit festival -- using Super 8 sound.
Do they still put ground glass on the kite strings and try to cut the other kites free? This looks very different.
And, the tall apartment buildings! I'll see if I can find these videos. I think I transfered them to DVD at some point.

Time has changed, and you shoot it long time ago, 25 years! Well, the video I have uploaded is International Kite Competition, so people come to take part from different country Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Shri Lanka, Pakistan and others! And they shows some innovative Kites, some of were very attractive and some are strange too! And this competition organized every year on 12th January in Ahmedabad (India).
And we have one very much passionate festival on 14th January, its huge festival; I know you are aware about it! I am sure you must have some memories in your mind, the people goes early morning on their tares and fly kites and enjoy to cut others, but I am sure we never put anything on kites or anything on thin string! People fly kites two day continues 14th and 15th January.
I would really like to see your vintage recording, if you find it please upload here; you told you have saved it on DVD!
And yes, Ahmedabad has changed so much, it has been declared as a Mega City, so all changes are necessary, they are so many new Malls and building have been build and are in process.

Mark Cinense August 31st, 2008, 08:45 AM How you liking your compact HD DVC? I am considering to get one. I am borrowing one now from a guy who doesn't like it. He say's it's not Pro enough for him. I see it doesn' have the features that would be nice to have like:
Audio Monitoring
Multiple Audio Inputs
But the picture quality is decent enough provided there is enough light. Are you using yours with a hot shoe light?

Steve Mullen October 31st, 2008, 02:38 AM Fun video!!! In the shot where you go past the tower with the red lighting on top and then go back -- is that the tower with the revolving resturant on top? If so that was built in the mid-80s. It's on the edge of the river -- right? I think you stopped and shot on the bridge.
If I'm right, as you head past the tower -- with it on your left -- and go a few more miles is where I used to stay with my girlfriend's family.
After mid-Nov I'll dig-out some FILM I shot in `82 and then some early video shot in `83 to `86. We can have an Indian video festival around New Years.
Jeff Nyman October 31st, 2008, 07:39 AM So what settings did you use on the HD7 to shoot at night? Anything special or did you just go auto?
Kaushik Parmar November 1st, 2008, 12:10 AM It seems you remember everything; yes you are right what you have said. That revolving restaurant was built in mid 80s, and I am sure you must have had Indian food in that revolving restaurant and you must also remember how great look from the top!
Yes, I do remember you wrote once me that you were leaving with your girlfriend in Ahmedabad. Yes, I took some shots from bridge and name of bridge is "Nehru Bridge". I would like to tell you here that there is one project is going on in that river front; it will be similar like river front project like in London. I have posted some videos sometimes back may be you have gone through, if not here is link, maybe you will find where you were staying:
Neharu Bridge, Ahmedabad, India on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/608358)
Neharu Bridge, Ahmedabad, India on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/605499)
Sabarmati River, Ahmedabad, India on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/640796)
And yes I would like to tell you that Ahmedabad has changed much, I guess you left it long time ago, you must remember undisciplined driving and dust and etc. But now things are changing Ahmedabad has been now declared as Metro City, so changes are required and Government is also doing same.
You must notice big road and traffic signals and etc. More & more Multinational companies are coming in Ahmedabad, GM has also have their manufacturing unit in Baroda nearby Ahmedabad, Nissan also arrived then recently Tata motors came with their chipset car in the world called "Nano", all Nano will be now produce in Ahmedabad, this city is going to be another Detroit now who knows?
If someone would like to know about Nano, the world’s chipset car then follows below link:
Tata Nano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tata_Nano)
Tata is same company which they recently acquired Jaguar & Land Rover from Ford:

Well, it was mixture kind of Auto/ Manual and I used "Halogen" preset! But I guess whole video was not that bad, what do you think? Do you like? Which camera you owned?

Mark Cinese,
I am glad you like this video, yes some effects look very nice! And about your question, I would say I never used tripod for my any videos, uploaded here! But I am going to buy good tripod for my work, I am not professtional, but I am just beginner.
I will soon update same video, with more inputs and I will remind you that time to see again.
I am very much fond of JVC GZ-HD7.

it does seem that the HD7 has OIS issues after 4x, but on sticks, this camera wroks very nice. I currently have a Velbon Tripod I got while in Washington state this last summer. I bought it at Fry's, but I would like to get a nicer set of sticks when I get around to it. Right now, I am looking to build a light kit and different lenses, and wireless Mics...
I got my camera from the Dr. in this forum... I almost went for the HG20, but my wife's cousin ended up buying the last one here in Albuquerque. Now she wants to compare to see which one is better. She is a painter and I doubt she will heavily get into videography, but you never know. At this point, I hope to out shoot her because her advantage is that she is an artist and my handicap is that I am a computer geek. I don't really think that I am artsy at all.

Jade Maestre,
I am glad you like the video, thanks for your compliments! No I do not think OIS weak! I am fine with it, even you can see my all videos, they are ok with OIS issue.
I will update this same video tomorrow, and will send you link.

Mark Cinense December 30th, 2008, 11:46 PM Kaushik,
I will upload some of the work I have done. I am a noob at this, about 9 months using FC, but I have been editing regularly since July and started shooting some of the stuff that I edit about 3 months ago. I have some other footage that I will edit soon, but just depends on time right now.
I know I should have lots of time now since I am unemployed, but I have other things going on that keeps me on my toes.
I will post a new thread as soon as I get the videos uploaded. I expect a lot of criticism since I am new at this. So I need a lot of pointers.

Thanks Kaushik, 2:12 - 2.32 (from the second video) will be fine (20 secs) -if this is too much, just make it shorter.
Yes, I like your "Kankaria Lake" video, there are many interesting shots and you've done far better editing in the second one! I also liked that Indian dance!
About stablity: If you used a monopod, you'd have 10 times greater stability or more, almost professional, it is easy to carry, it is light and foldable.

Ken Johnes,
From 2:12 to 2:32, total four different clips are involved, which clip you want? You want dance sequence clips or that white & yellow structural clip? Do let me know I will upload an original file for you!
And I am glad you like this video, so far I have not used tripod or monopod but I will use it in near future.
And that dance sequence actually is rehearsal, they are doing practice for their show, same day they have had their dance presentation, and if I would have captured original dance event in the night, that would have been great!
Yes, Indian tradition dance are amazing and have some very innovative steps! I invite you to see one of my old video, if you are fond of music and dance than see this link: Navaratri 2007, in Ahmedabad city of India on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/466120)
Send me your reaction after seeing it!

Oh, you're right, then a sample of the dance sequence where the dancers are in focus, or a sample of the clip starting at 1:42 (which starts with the tree and then shows some people) -whichever looks to you more "clean" will be fine -sorry for the hassle and thanks!

That's what I thought, innovative steps, in a style which I've never seen before!
Thanks for the festival clip, it was interesting and it looks like you have a lot of fun!
Still, to understand better that style, I'd prefer the dance clip on your "Kankaria Lake" video with that choreography based probably on the best traditional steps.

I'm still experimenting, but currently the basic requirements for max HD quality on YouTube is to upload a clip (less than 10minutes) in h264 (AVC) for video and AAC for audio, in mp4 container (.mp4 extension), deinterlaced, at 25-30fps, at 1280x720 resolution, and at least 4Mbit bitrate.
Since YouTube will re-encode your clip no matter what you do, the higher the quality of the upload clip, the better the final clip. The encoded clip I uploaded for the clip you saw was about 1.9Mbit and it had quite a few artifacts (especially in the beginning). So I uploaded a higher bitrate version -you can see now that the final clip is much cleaner:
YouTube - Baby Drummer HD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4E09GHlzxzo&fmt=22)
It doesn't matter which encoder you use, but if it's not a good one, you'll have to increase the bitrate further and that will make the upload slower.
Also, if your source is noisy, it will result in poor quality, so in that case it is better to de-noise the clip before the encode (with some spatial/temporal de-noise or smooth filter).
The biggest advantage for all NTSC or >25 fps camcorders is that YouTube accepts up to 30fps while Vimeo up to 25. So in that case (as your camcorder records at 29.97fps), in Vimeo the video will stutter, while on YouTube it will be smooth!
Kaushik, If you upload your videos to YouTube, drop a note.

I did some experiments on youtube, I found youtube keep HD files almost as it is! I have uploaded small clip (1920x1080) on youtube, and it was same while watching in HD mode!
Here( this is an original RAW file from HD7) is link: YouTube - MOV055 (http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=BGARZX_EqNU)
Here is my uploaded video on youtube: YouTube - Kankaria Lake Ahmedabad December 2008 (http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=MD-TP8p5GX0)
One more clip which I converted in Divx 1280p: YouTube - MOV055 (http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=cTAljchmzmA)
It seems youtube is giving good HD option, just 10 minuts video time is very less, and yes they allow upto 1GB!

Kaushik, sorry to dissapoint you but none of your clips you uploaded to YouTube remained at 1080p (1920x1080) resolution. All have been re-encoded to 720p (1280x720) at 2Mbits/sec (as usuall) (except the Kankaria lake which is 1280x702 -by some mistake I guess) and all with the following header:
"Title: (C) 2007 Google Inc. v08.13.2007."
The visual quality you see is very good -I'm glad you managed it, but they are not the originals you uploaded -never are.
To be able to check all the encoding parameters of your clips, download Mediainfo (free) from MediaInfo (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/) Install it and choose View->Html or Tree.
You can check them after you download them (or any video on your HDD). I personally download clips from Youtube using Firefox, having installed the "Internet Download Manager" -it provides me a "Download This Video" button above each YouTube clip with all versions available.
Another thing I noticed watching the Kankaria Lake, is that there is a frame skipping every 10 frames. You obviously do someting wrong in your video workflow that causes this frame skipping and makes the motion not completely smooth.

This is not too bad, you can break your clips to 10 minute interesting parts. The 1GB limit refers to the size of the uploaded video(s) not the final one you watch (that have been re-encoded) from YouTube.
