I'm wondering if you can help. I went on a course about a year ago where we shot with various macro lens setups on the XL2. 50 and 100mm canons, sigmas and such.

Anyway a women there had a specially made lens that I think was constructed from two other lenses. Anyway the net result was great macro capability but increased dof. I only wish I'd noted down the maker of the lens and some of the specifications.

I'm now going to be working on a project where this setup would be very useful indeed but don't really know where to start looking for such lens rigs or indeed how they really function. I know it was quite specialised but I'm sure the wealth of knowledge here should shed some light on it.

I use a Zeiss 60mm f2.8 Macro That I like.
1:1 magnification, great contrast, shallow DOF at f2.8, deep DOF at f22.

Sounds nice.

But the point of this lens is that without having to get into tiny apertures and the resulting lighting requirements this lens gave very deep DOF. It also ended up with a flipped image if that helps anyone puzzle out what it was or what was going on !!?

I don't have to stop down to f22.
I was just using that as the other end of the DOF extreme.
And the image is flipped with the Brevis I use.

David - Thanks I'm aware of what I can achieve with a 'normal' lens but I'm interested in this special long DOF set up. Makes a change with everyone usually asking about shallow dof rigs huh !


Anyway, anyone any ideas on this?

I suggest you try a couple different lens at a camera shop,
and try to get a better understanding of how they work at a given f-stop.
