Just wondering, with the extended time limit, who is an eager beaver and has started shooting already?

Well ..... Did some storyboarding, wrote the script, shot scene 3 ( the one that needs the effects work), just about to render that scene when I realized that the main character had not done his green screen shoot yet, so put that on hold. Gaffer (wife) is finishing the set ups now.........

So ya I think I started ;)

Shooting? No. But I have been exchanging emails with my writing team trying to come up with story ideas and a script. It was about as much progress as I was expecting so far, so I'll take it.

This might be the first time I’ve had a script written by the first night of the Challenge, so even though I’m not shooting yet, I'm feeling like an eager beaver. Or is it Beaver Cleaver?

Got two out of three actors and a location today. Walking up to a stranger and asking to use his property is scary, but by golly, it can pay off! Turned out the guy sort of knew me and I sort of knew him. Whew. Now if it'll just warm up a bit we'll be in business...

Well, yesterday I got drunk so I kind of started.. you know.. searched for inspiration... oh crap.. I thought the theme was "single malt Scotch"... damn.. now I have to start all over again... ;)

Storyboard? Actors? Green Screen? Writing Teams? What have I gotten myself into? I'm just hoping my kids are available. If this post counts, then yes, I've started.

Bruce,

I thoughts and prayers are with you. I lost a brother many years ago, and it was also sudden and unexpected. I hope you have a loving support group to help you accept this loss.

Okay then, you've sucked me in hook, line, and sinker - I see the LIGHT, so count me in (I just wired a donation for our worthy contest).

I believe Mugurel’s question was tongue-in-cheek, Mike. ;)

Dang it, I did such a lousy job of shooting the other night it’s been like micro-surgery trying to cut something together. We were so cold I didn't take enough time to get things right. Why, I ask myself, did I write a story that involves shooting at night and outdoors in the cold—my two least favorite things to do?

Rehi all,

I had the golden opportunity to roll some footage last night for a party sequence. OTOH, I finished the script today - it weighs in at a whopping 13 pages! Nutz, I hate carving up the story.

Are we allowed 5 minutes of story plus a tad extra for titles and trailer? (please) Maybe I'll make the actors talk as though they're from New York <wink>

Wow Michael, 13 pages. That's impressive. I don't think I could come up with 13 pages worth of story. My gang is showing up in about an hour to shoot the 2 pages we wrote the other day. Hopefully the rain stops so we can do the outside stuff. Otherwise I don't know how many locations I'm going to be able to make my one house look like.

Smile,
Kris

Hi all,

Grumble grumble - well, I've edited down my submission from 15 minutes to 6 minutes. From here on, the content/continuity gets dicey.

What's the official rules on submissions that encroach on the time limit? Maybe tomorrow life will look fracking better!

Good night, Michael

Michael,

I hate to have to give you the bad news, but the time limit is just 5 minutes. Part of what the DVChallenge is supposed to teach us is to make short to the point movies. I went about 4 1/2 minutes once on a 3 minute time limit and got chewed out by several people.

So, it is five minutes, with maybe a few seconds of fudge time, plus your credits.

Get out the scissors!

I'm going to be done soon, maybe tonight. I'm wondering if there was ever a decision that resolved the dilemma of instant availability on youtube taking away the phased release that we usually do. Should I post it but not tag it until it shows up on Dylan's list?

Smile,
Kris

Howdy Mike,

Thanks for the advise. No problemo - thinks look rosy this morning so I'll get out my creative juices along with the scissors. Ageed, it's hardly fair competition if some of us are allowed to skirt the contest rules...

O000h, be careful with that scalpel! But, it is a good lesson in filmmaking.

Look forward to seeing your movie.

Ditto for yours, Mike - you've certainly paid your dues. I did whittle it down to 5:00 excluding header and credits so now I'm "streel legal" (aside from a few continuity bumps). The music is scored, so aside from the credit roll, adding a foley effect here and there, I'm getting close to leaving the launch pad.

Is the latest process, upload first - add tags when instructed by Dylan to do so? This being my first entry, I'm not sure of our latest instructions. Dylan's blog post was a bit fuzzy for my linear mind (...upload to YouTube adding a title that says "thedvchallenge.com presents" and list it with our Youtube account 'TheDVChallenge')

Thanks, Michael

Nice going, Kris! That’s got to feel pretty good…

I’ve got a ways to go on this one. When the guy with the property didn’t come through I had to scramble for a new location, and that threw off some of my plans. The extension Dylan gave us on days really saved my bacon this time!

Hi Edward,

Not to worry - we can always add a dramatic sounds effect or music scores and all is forgiven with questionable video effects (pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...)

Except for the traditional disappearing act, I steered clear of SFX.

Good luck, Michael

LOL! Boy, can I relate! One of my friends won’t let me live down what he calls my “floating tiki bar” and the hands-from-nowhere in one of the other challenge movies. So, where can I find this FP editor? I may be interested… ;)

Oh, a Fisher-Price effects editor, that's what I need. Then maybe I'd stop re-writing my stories to avoid needing any.

But I'm done and staying done. Posted untagged to YouTube and it made my sisters laugh, so I'm calling it success.

Good luck everybody.

Ed,

Where do you get "Baby's FIrst Editor?" I tried Toys R Us, but they didn't carry it. My three year old may be a little old for it, but I'm still thinking she would enjoy one for Christmas.

Thought I was going to end up on the wall this time, because I had my children two weekends in a row, and my regular crew bailed on me for holiday parties and travel commitments. But my kids helped me pull together an entry. Just need to lay down a couple of guitar tracks, to have legit music too.

If Caroline had that "Baby's First Editing" system, she could have helped me piece this thing together. Gotta get that...

Well, it's not looking good, sports fans. Too much festivities, another (albeit paying) project, and a botched attempt to learn AE caca in a week and it's all making for <sigh> another spot on "the wall." I'm going to try and get what I can IN the can but I'm disappointed. Need to hire a 12-year-old to show me how to do this effects stuff (or stop relying heavily on effects, huh?). :D

Good luck DVC'ers! I look forward to seeing the entries.

Lorinda Norton
December 16th, 2007, 12:49 PM
Oh, try, Edward! Maybe you could just spoof it out, like text that says, “--- special effects here” or something. ;)

These darn things always seem to be disappointing in one way or another, so I sympathize with you. I’ve not forgotten my DVC motto that came from the “sun” challenge: If you don’t know After Effects, don’t try to do something that needs it!

Or maybe you and I need to enroll in an AE class… :)

Well, I'm debating whether to even try to edit what I have into a movie. I one of the best ideas that I've had and talked some friends into doing it, BUT!

I was shooting all day in Wellington, and they were shooting all day in Stuart. By the time everyone was done and we got together at his home, we were all tired and the kids were almost out of it. Shooting with small children at 10:00pm=Disaster.

The young girl was so tired we could not even get her to say simple lines. The dog was running all over and the cat who was just brought home after being missing for 2 weeks was crying moaning.

I may turn this in, but everyone realize that it is not like I wanted at all! If I were in school, I would say that the dog ate my homework!!!!!!!!!!!
