Hi
I am planning to get a new laptop. Any ideas what to get to use with the new Sony XDCAM-EX1? I also want to use this laptop for editing.

I'm also thinking about a new laptop...the Vista software has me worried, been reading a lot of mags such as PCWorld, LAPTOP, and Smart Computing and there are repeated references to learning curve, crapware that is loaded by the hardware people which slows the loading process down, etc. So I'm thinking about a Macbook Pro 17" loaded up. Any thoughts or feedback appreciated....tks ..bob

Some of the new Dell's are very nice and Dell does offer a Bluray drive on some of the models.....

I think they also have the slot for handling the SXS memory cards too...

you can ask them for Windows XP software, not sure they will give you one but you could always get
another hard drive and load XP on it and just save the original HD in case you wanted to slowly migrate
over to Vista...

What about this one?

The only concern is the Hard Drive speed 4200rpm. Is this speed OK for capturing video?

For what it's worth, I just got a new Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with 160GB 7200 RPM drive, 2.2 GHz Core Duo processor, 2 G RAM, and Windows Vista Business. So far no problems noted due to running Vista however I'm not using it with A/V software either.

What Vista version did you get? Has it got SxS inputs? Is there a reason for not using it for A/V software?

Windows Vista Business Edition. You've got me stumped on "SxS inputs" - I don't know what you're talking about there. As for not using it for audio and video, that particular computer is for other purposes. Have a desktop that's only a couple of years old for my main work with a number of A/V applications and have not found any compelling reason to upgrade from WinXP to Vista on it. Was just noting that the reputation of Vista being crash-prone seems more a figment of the Apple ads than reality because I have not had any issues with it so far.

What I meant about the SxS input was this from the leaflet:
" simply by inserting the SxS PRO memory card into the ExpressCard slot on a PC......"

Ahhh - you're referrig to Sony's new video storage card. The SxS card is an ExpressCard device and my Dell has an ExpressCard port so they are compatible. It also has a built-in SD memory card reader.
