View Full Version : Shark Tank for UWOL #6

Well Its looking suspiciously like I'm very nearly in the tank. Those sharks can smell my bacon and are looking hungry!

I've had a let down from planned collaborators, that was idea 1 and a great one it would have been too. I've done some covert IR filming in the garden and ended up getting nothing but the local cat. And I've been walking around the local woods playing Tawny owl calls from a CD player hoping another would check me out.

Nadda, Nowt.............zip diddley!

So sorry to hear this Mat! You always make the challenge so ... challenging! I sincerely hope something just falls in your lap between now and the 19th. It can happen! I know that you would never just throw something up just for the sake of being in, but fantastic footage can happen in an instance. It's not over until it's over.

Sorry to hear you are struggling, Mat.
There are still a few days left, so I really hope you manage to come up with something. Don't give up yet!

As much as I hate signing up for something and not completing it.It looks like I may be swimming.

Sorry to hear that John! Your entries liven up this challenge too! Hopefully you might get some inspiration this weekend?

...this is because he spends too much time messing around with photoshop and not enough time working on his entry. you have an entire weekend, lad! get out there and shoot something!

Catherine Russell
November 17th, 2007, 09:52 AM
Mat you crack me up! But I agree with Meryem.... I'm sure you were working on that photo when you could have been shooting film. For shame! ;-).

Cat

Can't help to admit that was very well done!

way to pile on, cat! let's see if a little tough love is motivating.

we should print this on UWOL coffee cups, though...a drink from one of these every morning should keep a few folks out of the tank.

we can call it our "Spend the Morning With Mat" anti-shark tank campaign.

Looks like my first-time signup for the contest is ending in me swimming with the sharks. As a new-comer to this contest I didn't want to fail. The subject I chose was a simple one, weather and animals depending and while they are usually out and about, for almost a fortnight they were just not there...

So I hang my head in shame and take a dip...

I'm still trying to toss around ideas. I have small bits of several different ideas none of which would flow together. So, I'm trying to think of a bridge between them or something totally different.

Getting down to the wire!

Russ, sorry to hear you take a swim this round.
Hope you stay with us in the future challenges!

Guys,

You know, its ok to not have it all perfect, wonderful and exactly as anticipated.
If nothing else it will be a great editing exercise.

Titles: disgruntled videographer (emphesizing what wasn't got
perhaps)

night labrinth

chaotic collections

Underdeveloped (in numerous ways perhaps)

Night drive

Random access video

Ok, yea I know, easier said than done. Just do an abstract cut of what you have, eh???
One night left to shoot and an hour or two of editing and you are out of there!!

okay - I'm in the water again...

We've had a fair bit or rain here and I was waiting for a clear patch to catch the fireflies in the local rainforest, then I waited for some moon on the water and then I went for the possums - I've got fruit everywhere and they're on vacation

I'm putting on the floaties and jumping in

I've been trying all night to get this thing uploaded, but just won't seem to want to play. It's now just gone past midnight, so i guess i'm in the tank. It's a pitty, i wish i knew more about how to upload stuff, maybe i could have go it in in time!

Hi Bryce.
You need a FTP program installed on your computer to do the uploading.
I reckon you've got an email from meryem telling you how to upload (username/password).

If your using PC (windows) here's a free FTP prg.
Link: http://www.smartftp.com/download/

Wish you good luck.

Bryce, can you tell us what the problem is? Any details?
Will be easier to help you if we know more.
Would be very sad if you finish and then can't get it uploaded.

yes, bryce, if you've finished, don't give up. the deadline is midnight anywhere in the world. you have all day and until midnight here in Colorado. i'm sure the players and i can diagnose the problem and help you, if you tell us what problems you are having...

Well, I've compressed my piece of junk three times only to have it crash before finishing.

I think Compressor is saying "Bad Kevin, Bad, BAD! Don't enter junk just to be able to vote"

I always knew my Mac was smart but I didn't know how smart till now. :)

Hi all,
Well the problem is that the ftp site won't accept the password. Not sure why this is, but each time i type it in, it just comes up with the boox again to enter the password?? Any ideas? I have to get going to work, but if i can get it uploaded before i leave that would be great!

mac or pc? which FTP client are you using to upload?

and remember, these are case-sensitive, where we sent you the password, if there is a capital letter, you must capitalize it, and lower-case must be lower case. this is where most people seem to get tripped up...so we'll start there.

Move over tank dwellers,
I did my best, and got a some night shots not that great footage,

Last Friday night my son bought me Final Cut Studio, Great so I thought, I’ll get Larry guru Jordan out tonight and go over a bit of Motion, I used a great little prog Appdelet to remove odd files from the old version and loaded the full new version.

I started to capture the night video I had dropped frames after dropped frames.

Meryem, there is something wrong with the FTP server, that for sure! I have been trying to upload for some time now and it reject to give me access.
I know that I'm doing this the correct way, so I think somebody should have a look at the server right away!

Meryem Ersoz
November 19th, 2007, 03:44 PM
Hi Per: I'm testing it right now, and I think I'm seeing that Bryce's (BC_nightshift) uploaded, so I think that . Let me keep testing, and I'll get back to you. But I seem able to download from the designated UWOL 6 folder.

Ok, fine! My current ip-adress is *.*.*.* if you want to look up on the ftp-servers log.
My ftp client is still trying to connect...

Anyway I have uploaded my entry to my website, so I can of course email you the link to the file, but this will not help any others which don't have this option!

Seems like Bryce managed to upload his film. But for info:

I also get multiple of those "log in" windows, but I just ignore them after I have logged in the first time. After I log in the first time, and when I drag the video file from windows explorer to the ftp site, a new "log in" window appears. So that means that during the upload process, I also have one of those "log in" windows open.

Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 attempts before the upload process begins.

To Per, e-mail sent...

To everyone: If you are having upload difficulties, send me an e-mail at uwol@comcast.net--as long as I know that you have completed your entry, you are considered "done" and a valid finisher. We will deal with whatever upload issues arise. If our uwolchallenge.com site is having FTP issues, we have alternatives which we can address at that point....

Gordon's seems to have arrived as well...we'll get it figured out, Per, don't worry.

Meryem, I'm about to upload right now on my portable PC to the uwolchallenge site :-)

Something is causing the fault on my stationary PC. Think something is been blocked in my firewall, anyway I'm almost in...

PS! Thanks very much for your big offer Meryem, but it seem that I don't need your alternative ftp-server!

Ha ha ha very cool... ...uploaded 40% and was thrown out of the server. Will retry later...

Kevin Railsback
November 19th, 2007, 05:16 PM
I'm moving some stuff around so I wonder if it's a matter of to many people on the server at once?
I'm about done in there so that'll be one less person on it.

I must of punched in the password over a dozen times before it let me on. All went well then thou really slow uploading.

Hi all,
Well i did manage to get my entry uploaded atlast. Thanks to all for the encouragement to keep trying. It sounds like others are having the same problems i was. Funny thing was, i had tried countless times, then all of a sudden, it just worked??? I hope everyone gets theirs uploaded without too many hassles.

i'm glad you got yours in, bryce, i previewed it (to make sure it was yours), and it had some really cool moments.

mat already has these things up and ready at the website. the boy never sleeps! so go get 'em and rev up your feedback threads...which should look like this:

UWOL #6 "Stormynight" by Trond Saetre (trond's already chomping at the bit for some feedback...)

and p.s. EXCELLENT WORK, everyone. with such a hard theme, we have 20 total entries (one non-compete entry is still out). this is right in line with our last Challenge, MAMMALS, where we had 21 entries. you UWOLers are the best--no rain, no fog, no dark and stormy night can keep you from stomping around the world with your cameras, shooting stuff. you're the best!

i promise to go easy next time!

Bah!

Could have written a sit-com about this challenge, from the Queen being at home and not deciding to switch the lights on in her castle, to a power failure at a train station, to the rain lashing down whenever the lens cap was off.
Needless to say, i'm trying to swim with concrete flippers and there's some big grey shapes cruising in the distance... glug glug glug :(

Looking forward to seeing your vids....

You are right there Rob, HRH didn’t have a shilling for the electric the night I went over to Windsor, and did it rain it just lashed down, I did a bit of the old station and the castle then over to Eaton school and bridge, next drove over to Sonning village to get some shots of the old pubs, and the river lit up by the French Horn restaurant.
It was a wet misty miserable night.
The entry’s to challenge are all looking very good.

Shark food again. Bad planning and organisation struck again. I got some footage and some stills but I couldn't get it together. I must try harder next year.

Congratulations to all the entrants.

well, we are going to clean the slate and run one of our little sub-Challenges to see who can finish 6/6 in year two. so 2008 will be a brand new day, for those of you who want to pursue the Mega-Challenge of finishing the one-year cycle...you made some very pretty films from your tiny little rock, grant, i would have pegged you for a full-year finisher, but oh, those sharkies and their little sharp teeth, chomp chomp...their bellies are full of NIGHT-bait that's for sure.

look for an easy kick-off round on february 1...my penance for torturing so many.
