Mat, Kevin, and I are coming up pretty empty-handed trying to think of a brilliant t-shirt slogan! we have a few ideas but are opening it up to the group, to make sure that we get the best idea....

Our contest needs a clever t-shirt slogan, and we are but poor meagre video producers...(DV Challenge uses the brilliant, in my opinion, "cheaper than film school"--we need something that perfect!)

we need something short but sweet that captures the essence of UWOL...

and by "essence," i do NOT mean how we smell after 3 days of hiking through the open space to get the shot...

anyone have one? we have a list in progress, but if you can think of something clever, either post it here or hit me with an e-mail. if we use it, you get the t-shirt for free....

i do NOT mean how we smell after 3 days of hiking through the open space to get the shot...Rats, there goes my suggestion then (Stink or Swim).

how about something along the lines of:

We Cover More Ground

Go Outside And Start Shooting (or) Go Outside And Shoot Something

It's A Big World, Give It Your Best Shot

Explorecord

That's good suggestions, Chris.

How about "Work hard, produce quality" , or something like that.

Here's something which will probably seem really obscure to most everyone here, but I thought I'd throw it out anyway. The motivation for the "UWOL" in the forum title, Under Water - Over Land was inspired by a lyric from my favorite band of all time, Midnight Oil. It's from the first track of their album "Breathe" from 1996, a song called Underwater, and the first line sounds like it could apply to wildlife videographers although as I said it's quite an obscure reference... but kinda cool (to me, at least):

Scanning At The Blue Bended Headland.

Just had to put it out there. Okay, and now back to other suggestions which make more sense!

1) Natural Born Uwolers.
2) The original Under water - Over land.
3) It's time to think about Under water - Over land.
4) Uwol is my world.
5) Uwol - The Wildlife Video people.
6) With a name like uwol, it has to be good.
7) Don't play with fire, play with Uwol.
8) Where the hell is Under Water - Over Land?
9) The Spirit of Wildlife video challenge.
10) Wildlife video challenge, created by nature.

I just have to put this on as well :)
Nr 11) I lost weight with UWOL challenge.

Here's mine...

It's Ur WOrLd...go out and capture it!

However, I'm a big fan of Meryem's early line about the challenge...

This is adventure folks, and where there's a camera involved, there's adventure in your own back yard.

Great suggestion, Greg! Plus now that you're
pointing it out, I like Meryem's a lot as well:

An Adventure In Your Own Back Yard

Meryem Ersoz
November 12th, 2007, 01:05 PM
hm, forgot about that....

"Adventure in your own Backyard" isn't bad, but we don't want to promote any idea which would discourage geir from paddling all over norway in his red canoe...or per from schlepping 90 kilos of gear up a cliff...

keep em coming, though...a group brainstorm is always fun.

i am rather liking "stink or swim" but it is a little too insider--we want other people to be able to understand our mission as well...

A little off topic...
I see our friends Chris Hurd and Greg Boston are helping with ideas for the slogan.
UWOL friends, now we need to talk them into signing up for the next challenge!

Chris and Greg, wouldn't you guys just love to wear one of those high quality, unique t-shirts? All you have to do is to sign up and make some nice videos...
And of course you have to follow the most important rule.... #11 HAVE FUN!
Join us, you won't regret! :)

Catherine Russell

Wow! You guys are really creative!

The only one's that come to mind to add to the mix are:

The Under Water Over Land (UWOL) 2007 Film Challenge
...... Where Nature Rocks our Video.

or maybe

The Under Water Over Land (UWOL) 2007 Film Challenge
...... Going "Wild" with Video.

My latest brainstorm...

I'm AWOL for UWOL!

variation:

You'll go AWOL for UWOL.

For the uninitiated: AWOL is a military acronym for Absent Without Leave. But it could apply to civilian day jobs as well.

More sillyness....

Lights! Camera! Nature call!

UWOL...Grounded in High standards of Fluid motion.

i'm cuckoo for coco puffs...('marican insider joke...)

ok, now we're talkin! i like both of these...

AWOL for UWOL is too US-centric for our little international endeavor, but it's got a nice ring to it.

"Lights! Camera! Nature call!" is amusing. should we be funny? serious?

maybe we should just use Trond's favorite line as our slogan...

Did you get the metaphor in my last one of that post?

Grounded = Land
High = Sky
Fluid = Sea

Meryem Ersoz
November 12th, 2007, 04:37 PM
no, i have to say that one went totally over my head.

damn that useless doctorate, what a complete waste of my time! all those years studying literature, and i can't even think of a good four-word slogan. or even understand anyone else's....

how about, "we're so global, we don't need no stinkin' SMPTE standards"

Meryem Ersoz
November 12th, 2007, 05:02 PM
now that you have all had a chance to play along at home, i'm throwing up (gaaaack!) my original list for public scrutiny....

"planet Earth's #1 nature and outdoors video contest"

"your world, your vision"

"your vision, your world"

"get out there and shoot something"

"cameras gone wild"

"focus on your world"

"exposing the planet, one country at a time" --ok, that's not very coherent

and now our original front-runner, before i posted this thread and got all your groovy suggestions....

"our world, your vision"

the identical one that dylan suggested was also on my list, at some point...

i've also been cooking something about "the world on your desktop" but it always turns out clunky...something to work with, though....

KEEP EM COMING! there's some good material here, everyone....

"Tales of Wonder and Woe"

Ok then one more...dead simple !

UWOL.......GET OUT MORE !

12) UWOL fills you up inside.
13) Wildlife videoingized!!
14) Wildlife videoing, couldn't ask for more.
15) Wildlife videoing is the word.
16) Wildlife videoing makes me happy.
17) Wildlife videoing the sign of success.
18) Smart people choose World wide wildlife video.
19) World wide wildlife video, not that other crap.
20) UWOL - the science of wildlife video.

That's it, now my brain is empty :)
Good luck Meryem, now you suddenly in it to your neck, choosing the slogan, hahaha

I've been too busy stumbling around in the dark on the current challenge to look much at dvinfo the past few days, but this looks like a fun thread. Here are some more ideas- there are lots of good ones already- what a creative explosion here!

1- We Put the Wild On Tape
2- Get Wild
3- Nature Cam
4- Film Your World
5- Under Water Over Land - Camera In Hand
6- Capture Nature
7- Take Only Video (leave only tripod prints)
8- We're Wild For You
9- UWOLers- The Wild Bunch
10- Zooming Through Nature

oh, looky here...young gabriel. at last, we have a sighting. how is Young Love treating you, gabe?

"Tales of Wonder and Woe" is a bit gothic, i think, from the depths of my over-wrought personality...a bit too h.p. lovecraft, i would say. it makes me think of catacombs and manacles and scorned love. but i'm glad to hear that folks like the turn of the phrase, for what it is....

benjamin's "animal-tested" has a kernel in it...maybe we should print up that whole standard "no animals were harmed in the making of this movie" blurb in small print below the logo...

"animal-tested, planet Earth-approved"

"Earth-friendly media from all across the globe"

there's no such thing as too many good ideas! keep spewing them out!

interesting trivia tidbit that i just learned that might be of general interest...

the American Humane Association has registered "no animals were harmed" as a trademark...so we can't mimic their material, although i think "animal-tested" is ok...

and they have a downloadable PDF with their guidelines at their website. it's not really pertinent to shooting animals in the wild, but it is kind of interesting reading for anyone interested in the ethical treatment of animals in Hollywood films.

it's really hard to find a single line that sums up the experience....we've kicked around some pretty good ideas and had some fun doing it, but i'm still jealous of "cheaper than film school" --because it is also witty. witty is always good, not entirely necessary, but it definitely adds...

the salient points of UWOL:
1) it's international
2) it's focused on nature and outdoors
3) you meet a lot of cool people
4) you learn a lot about making better video

wish i could come up with a single line that encapsulates all of the salient points, but something is always left out.

they don't call this a Challenge fer nuthin' --this is harder than making my NIGHT entry....

Hi Meryem.
I think it's right there in front of you/us.

UWOL - made by international cool people, making better nature and outdoors video.

or

Always the real thing, always (or; meeting) international cool people making better nature and outdoors video.
