View Full Version : New from Georgia
bokkus37 September 16th, 2002, 03:40 PM hi everyone,
i'm a recent filmschool grad (fullsail) and i've moved back to georgia. sigh. i've been looking for work for about two months now and apparently georgia isn't exactly a hotbed for movie activity. i've actually been hoping i'd fall into something. if something menial doesn't come around soon then i'm making a movie. i swear to dog.

Ken Tanaka September 16th, 2002, 03:46 PM Welcome!
Congratulations on your recent graduation. What is your opinion of the Full Sail school?
bokkus37 September 17th, 2002, 01:45 PM i've heard alot of positive things from people on this site about the school, but i came out with nothing but bad stories. like this one time a script of mine was chosen for a 16mm production. i felt like a real writer for the first time. then i failed a film history class for attendance. they pulled my script and told me i had to stay back a month, instead of just making up the class when i was done. i was pissed. even more so when i found out what they called policy was just for me. people before me and after me in classes failed that same class and got to move forward and make it up when they were done.
and i still haven't gotten my fullsail watch!

Mac Daddy September 19th, 2002, 08:32 AM Greetings from Snellville! (suburb of Atlanta)
I live in Snellville, and work in Duluth as a videographer/audio engineer. They are actually shooting about 3 movies that I currently know of down in Griffin, just south of Atlanta. Cuban Gooding Jr. is doing a movie there, and Burt Reynolds and some other notable leadin lady is doing a film there at the same time. There is a third film, and names etc. are forgotten.
The film industry in Atlanta got a huge kick in the ass when the local trucker's union started raising rates and gouging the crews that came here. "Driving Miss Daisy," amongst others were done here. Oh yeah "Robo-Cop III" was also shot in Atlanta. The buzz from PC&E and other places where film gear gets rented is that its starting to pick up again, a little.
I come from Minneapolis originally and freelanced there for about 8 years. I hear from my close friends in that market that because of the movie crews flocking to Toronto because of the strong exchange rate, the west coast is hurting for business and have slashed rates. Therefore- commercial shoots - which used to be sort of plentiful in the St Paul/ Minneapolis area-- have almost all gone out to the west coast now.
Atlanta- well? I moved down here to work for my current corporate-employer, and dont know this city's market as well. The music is R&B or Rap. There are a number of really good recording studios, but I'm too far along in my career, with family, and too short on extra time to do the normal route of working up through running for coffee and learning the ropes on the side.
I thought Fullsail was for audio recording? Huh. What area are you looking to get involved in? Writing? If I can help at all, shoot me an email.
Good luck,
Jeff Patnaude

Edwin Wilson November 7th, 2007, 06:17 PM Hello, all, from Northeast Georgia. Normally go by "Ed" but there was already an "Ed Wilson" registered. Pretty new to video; have been an amateur photographer for quite some time but never really pursued video (other than some highly embarrassing spoof films on VHS as a teenager). I'm a Deputy Sheriff, and a co-worker and I made a video for the agency's annual awards banquet about four years ago as a "Hey, wouldn't this be neat" kind of thing, with still photos and video clips we'd shot throughout the year. The Sheriff liked it so much that our one-off spare-time video became an annual event; so every year (right around this time) we have to come up with a new one. Neither of us has a whole lot (read: any) real experience with shooting or editing video, but, thankfully, the expectations of our audience are low. We're also being asked to make a recruiting video for the agency. So, I expect I'll have plenty of questions to come... I've already learned quite a bit from reading the forums, and are trying to pick up whatever books on both shooting and editing I can.
What I've got to work with: Sony V1U, 24" white iMac, FCE. Prior to the Mac and V1U I was using Vegas 5 (I think it was 5) and a Sony DCR-HC20. Depending on when Apple announces the new Mac Pros, I'm planning on upgrading to a Pro and FCS. Really, far more camera than I need for such a project, but I'm planning on growing into it; and the recruiting video has to look good (Never annoy the Sheriff).
Carl Middleton November 7th, 2007, 06:32 PM Welcome to DVinfo!
You have the gear to do it right... enjoy and fire away with questions!
Carl
Ronnie Richardson November 7th, 2007, 11:02 PM (Never annoy the Sheriff).
Sure you can, then you can come over here and work with the AL State Troopers with me. Actually I'm not an arresting officer with the Department but work in Communications Engineering.
Ronnie
George Ellis November 9th, 2007, 02:51 PM Oh Noz! A Hall County Deputy! Run for cover! j/k - I used to work with the SCCA at Road Atlanta and used to know a few of you guys by sight and name from the track. Still hangout at Chicopee Woods to mountain bike and have helmetcam footage with a HC7 I am working on.
Edwin Wilson November 9th, 2007, 05:50 PM Not Hall, but close. *grin*
My roommate is currently in the process of trying to trim a Merlin, and I'm hearing an amazing assortment of swear words. We're spending so much time playing with the new stuff that we're forgetting what we're supposed to be doing- finishing the awards banquet video.
Well, the quality can't get much worse than previous years, I suppose...
I've done some still photography at Road Atlanta on open track days; never tried video there (yet)... as well as mount the HC20 to the motorcycle. Mounting the V1 will take some head scratching.
Ronnie: Troopers? I'll forgo the limerick I'm currently thinking of. Joke- we have to give Troopers a hard time no matter what state. They've saved our bacon more than once, though.
George Ellis November 9th, 2007, 08:34 PM If you do RA and want some sound, 2 mics, one towards 7, one towards 9 at Turn 8. You pick them up coming out of 7 and going through 9. I have a low quality one done on a cassette with 2 $5 mics and auto noise limiter of the old 3.5l Cogsworth V-8 (14k redline) in the Davy Jones Jaguar that is just glorious. www.versatilemediasolutions.com/Files/davy.wav
Edwin Wilson November 10th, 2007, 10:04 AM Thanks! I'll have to try that... in fact, I can hear them from my back porch now... My back door is 8/10 mile as the crow flies from turn 7, according to Google Earth.
Bob Hollifield November 15th, 2007, 05:36 AM Ed, I will also say welcome to DV I and I've only been here a few weeks. I think this is a great place. I'm down in the Roswell area. I'm also a still photographer (hobby) www.colemanroadproductions.com and enjoy shooting whitewater kayakers up on the Ocoee. Did one video with my HV20 and it was fun. George, I just bought a RODE stereo videomic from Kenny down at SC...gonna try to record a little band I know. Maybe later a field recorder or mixer for better sound. Do you know of any threads that tell what settings to use on the camera? I've been searching...not much luck.
Good luck Ed with your project, sounds like it would be fun.
Bob
George Ellis November 16th, 2007, 12:43 PM Bob, try the All Things Audio section along with the HV10/20 section. The Videomic has been discussed in audio and audio setup has been discussed in the Canon section.
Dick Mays November 17th, 2007, 08:50 PM Ed,
I used to have a Hoschton mailing address for nine years. Now in Dunwoody.
Welcome to dvinfo!
Here is one video I shot while living in Barrow county, You might recognize the coffee shop.

Edwin Wilson November 18th, 2007, 11:30 AM Thanks for the welcomes. I'm not sure I'm better off than the time all I knew was "miniDV tape goes here", but I'm slowly learning.
Ian Farlow November 18th, 2007, 12:07 PM Well, my roommate has beaten me to the punch (Edwin Wilson). I am coming here on his suggestion as we have both decided to dive into video (and what a financial dive it was). I have always enjoyed photography, and this seemed like a natural progression. Plus, being a nut for technology, this has helped bring new and interesting gear into the house!
I don't have any real experience with video, although as Ed mentioned, we have been working on the annual Sheriff's Office videos for several years now. I would like nothing more than for the Sheriff to decide that the Sheriff's Office needs two full-time media managers, as Ed and I would gladly step into those roles. I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I won't be holding my breath.
I've been teaching myself Final Cut Studio 2, and while overwhelming at times, I am getting it little by little. The Apple Pro series books are wonderful and I have really enjoyed learning from them.
Anyway, I look forward to learning what others here are teaching and can't wait to really get into this.
Lorinda Norton November 20th, 2007, 03:01 AM Welcome, Ian..and Edwin, too!
Think I read on Edwin’s thread that you two are doing a recruiting video for the sheriff’s office there. I’m in the middle of one right now in my county—having to change the beginning because the sheriff hired a consultant who said my “tough, action guy” approach was not befitting of the type of person they’d want to attract. I had to laugh, because it’s the very thing all the guys in the office wanted me to do. But…I gotta do what I’m told! (Actually, what she said does make sense…)
Anyway, I hope you two get those full-time media jobs; that would be great! :)

Gotta love politics, huh?

Actually, we get that about the yearly Banquet videos, as well. The families of the deputies want to see funny stuff, picture montages, etc. The deputies themselves want to see action stuff. Although, the threat now when a camera comes out for something embarrassing is "This'll be in the banquet video!"
Out of curiosity, what sort of approach did you take? Of the two best recruiting videos I've seen, one was a "day in the life" type that followed the (fictional) events of one day on the job; the second was a more standard "Here's what we've got, with a good soundtrack" type. Both were shot and edited very well, just different approaches.
Lorinda Norton November 20th, 2007, 11:56 PM Hi Edwin,
If I did a “day in the life” type it would bore potential employees to death! One of the Lieutenants told me the job of an officer is 90% boredom and 10% action. :)
I’m covering the entire Sheriff’s office, which means everything from the jail (heavy on the jail and training, since that’s where everyone has to start) to dispatch, animal control, etc., to SWAT. Because of that I chose a moderately high-energy music video style. It’ll have the obligatory interviews with three people, but they’re going to be brief with coordinating clips and VO. Hopefully, the whole thing will come in under seven minutes. Slow-paced it will not be—not if I can help it.
I have to say it’s been a great year covering these folks and I’m going to miss it. (It’s a volunteer effort because the Sheriff is my friend.) I got in on a multi-agency SWAT challenge out in the desert mountains, CERT training, patrol ride-alongs, K9—all kinds of stuff. It was a blast!
About the music, I got permission to use a soundtrack of a local 80’s rock band, complete with synth and that Van Halen drum sound that is so cool. Hahaha! :)
