What is the best setting for slow motion when using the XHA1?

Suggestion:

Set the shutter speed to 1/120th (NTSC) or 1/100th for PAL.

50% would look better then 40% but I think it all depends on the shutter speed you shot it with to begin with.. The higher the shutter the more you can slow it down no?

No. Shutter is usually set higher just so that there wouldn't be an excess of motion blur.

I had great luck with slow motion using an XL H1, 1080i, interlaced, at 1/60th of a second and bright sun.

I used Vegas to slow it down.

Later, others suggested that it would have been even better at 1/120th of a second shutter speed.

I suggest that take some test footage, then try to slow it down in your Non-Linear Editor. Sony Vegas worked very well for me. I was amazed at the results.
