I'm a little confused about how this works.

I have FCP 4 academic. I bought the $700 upgrade to FCP Studio 2, which turns out doesn't upgrade from academic after all. So I bought a non-registered FCP 2 on Ebay, and looks like my upgrade will work with that.

My question - if this works out ok, I'm going to sell my version of FCP 4 academic, but I don't know if I can sell the FCP 2 -- if I've used it to upgrade to FCP Studio 2, is there something that checks that number and makes it useless to someone else? I just wouldn't want to screw someone over if they try to do the same thing I did.

Hi Philip. I don't know if the installer checks serial numbers or not. But selling a copy of FCP which was used to upgrade to a new version is a clear violation of the license you agreed to when you installed the software. See: http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/finalcutpro51.pdf

Updates: If an Apple Software update completely replaces (full install) a previously licensed version of the Apple Software, you may not use both versions of the Apple Software at the same time nor may you transfer them separately.

That makes sense... guess that was a dumb question.
