ok, well i bit the bullet and finally bought one of these babies...

Now with the old Z1s, i had no trouble connecting it to my XP system and capturing with Vegas...

Now though, when I plug in the A1 through firewire, switch the camera to VCR mode to capture, I get av/c device popping up in windows.
This all seems good and proper.. but.. Windows then searches or a driver for this unit to run, to no avail.
I then open up Vegas 6 or 7 (8's too flaky for me right now) and lo and behold, the camera isnt even recognised.

The camera is set to HDV on the outset as i have no inclination to shoot or transfer in SD.

Anyone know where i can find a driver for this?
On this machine, ive captured footage from DVX100's MX500s Z1's DSR570's etc etc and ive never had any issues.. now though, I have no idea whats going on..

any ideas?

I've found the same issue in my XP install. It works for me if I start Vegas and then turn the camera on after Vegas loads.

Hmmmm.... I should point out that on my laptop with XP SP2 is works fine, regardless of the order in which i turn on or plug in...

Ill give your method a go, if not, i'll be stuck capturing with my laptop on removable drives and transferring.

One other thing is that if I set the cam to downconvert from HDV to DV, it captures fine and XP can not only see the cam, but captures... problem with the capture is an incredible number of dropouts... which is very strange because I saw no dropouts or lockups on the A1s LCD

Well, you chaps are getting a little further than I am - neither of my XP systems "see" the camera when I have the playback standard set to HDV. They both recognise it as a "Canon DV Camcorder" when the playback standard set to DV and I can capture footage down-converted in-camera. However, there's nothing to say XP has recognised an "AV/C" device.

Now, I'm sure I've read about this problem around here some time ago. I've just done a quick search for "XP" and "capture" but I haven't turned anything up yet, and I'm only on a slow and expensive dial-up line, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful.

BTW - I have two XP Professional systems, both running SP2. One is an AMD 2400+ on which I have been editing DV for more than 4 years. The second is a brand new Core2Quad machine, built by a specialist digital video computing company specifically for editing HDV. Both of them are behaving in the same way.

My apologies - although XP behaves differently when my XH-A1 is in HDV mode, and doesn't pop any window indicating that a new device has been switched on, my NLE, Avid Liquid 7.2, sees the camera just fine, can control it and can capture from it. So I was getting worried for no reason.

Although this link relates to Vista, many of the twists and turns apply to XP also, worth checking out (at length) for possible options.
