View Full Version : Shipping Date for the EX
Winston Ashley October 5th, 2007, 12:38 AM Does anyone know the official word on a possible shipping date and/or USD price yet? Do you think it will release before DV EXPO WEST?
(Didn't see a thread for this so direct me to it if I missed it)

Jamie Allan October 5th, 2007, 08:47 AM We've got 1st Nov in the UK, no idea about US I'm afraid..
Craig Seeman October 5th, 2007, 11:30 AM B&H shows Approx. November and price as TBA. It's a Jewish Holiday (has been for many days) so they may update it on Sunday or Monday.
Winston Ashley October 19th, 2007, 08:32 PM I talked with a rep at Discont Video and he said Mid November. He also mentioned that the price for the camera is a "Fixed" price. Apparently, he says, it cannot be sold under 6449... anyways here's the email below.
"Hi Ashley,
We started entering orders yesterday. The price is $6449 and we are expecting shipments by mid-November (so says Sony).
I expect this to be one of the more successful product offerings of recent years. It seems to have all the right stuff.
I’ve attached the product brochureb and a link to an interesting review, please let me know if you have any questions.
Regards,
Lee
Winston Ashley October 22nd, 2007, 09:37 PM Here is the email I got from my source and i went ahead and ordered one. i will post videos and stills once I get it. Apperently the 8 gig card is shipped with the camera and another will be sent by sony once I send them my blood.
"Hi Ashley,
Confirming your order for PMW-EX1 at $6449. Your order number is xxxxxx. I’ve charged your credit card a $650 deposit (refundable, of course).
Based on Sony’s latest info I expect to ship the week of 11/19.
Thanks very much,
Lee
Phil Bloom October 25th, 2007, 11:33 AM My supplier has told me today he has heard they are leaving Sony in Japan next week so should be available to customers the week after. Let's hope so

Tibor Duliskovich November 1st, 2007, 12:50 PM I ordered one on BH Photo about a week ago and contacted them today about expected shipping date. They said Sony will ship around Thanksgiving or after. If this is true I will have to wait till I return from a tradeshow, 1st of December. Terrible.
Craig Seeman November 1st, 2007, 01:09 PM Around Thanksgiving (Nov 22 for those not from USA)!
My gosh, we'll have scoured the manual and run out of things to talk about by then!
Marty Baggen November 1st, 2007, 06:06 PM This group never runs out of things to talk about
Steven Thomas November 1st, 2007, 07:51 PM This group never runs out of things to talk about
You've got that right!
I'd like to hear more about direct comparisons with current cams that are close in price. I know there's a few of us that had our hands on these things briefly.

Greg, Looks like I missed that. My apologies, I'll keep that in mind next time I post. Thanks.
Joachim Hoge November 2nd, 2007, 04:23 AM Ok
As I just posted in another thread, I just got off the phone with my Sony dealer.
This dates are for Norway (Europe).
The camera will ship from The Netherlands 8th of November arriving in Norway around the 12th
Price has dropped the equivalent of $2000 since I placed my order in August.
16GB card is $1000 over here
Wideangel adapter is $685
Batteries $300
One peoblem is that only the camera with 2 8GB cards will ship first.
Batteries in December
WA in January
Cards?
The battery situation is idiotic. One need a spare battery, I canīt go on a shoot with one batttery
Just thought I share this information
Paul Joy November 2nd, 2007, 05:03 AM One peoblem is that only the camera with 2 8GB cards will ship first.

I can't imagine many professionals are going to be able to go on a shoot knowing that their camera will last less than 2 hours. I suppose it would give us a few weeks to get used to the camera though.
When I placed my order I was told that the battery and camera would ship together but the WA would be in December, but that was a few weeks ago though so may be out of date info.

I know. I hope what I was told was wrong when it comes to the battery situation.
Do the camera ship with a power adapter to run it off the mains?
Paul Joy November 2nd, 2007, 05:13 AM Do the camera ship with a power adapter to run it off the mains?
Yes, although it's not possible to recharge a battery whilst doing this, either on the charger or with a battery in the camera.
Joachim Hoge November 2nd, 2007, 05:17 AM Well at least that save me on the documentary that
Iīm undertaking. Itīs mostly indoors and in controlled situations.
Tibor Duliskovich November 2nd, 2007, 08:29 AM SxS flash memory card are not going to be available anytime soon. I just checked Sandisk and Sony sites and it seems these cards are either still in development or the production facilities are not yet ready to mass produce them. And I am talking about the 8GB cards, 16 and 32 GBs are way beyond the horizon.
It is becoming annoying that manufacturers try to capture more of market by announcing their products half year in advance... Please give us realistic release dates and don't give us bare-bones, we need all optional accessories available when products ship!
Craig Seeman November 2nd, 2007, 08:58 AM Obviously 8GB cards are available since they're included with the camera. In what quantity I don't know but they're already in production.
Sandisk Sept press release said their 8GB and 16GB cards would be shipping in Nov. Even if they're behind sched I'd guess they'd be December or January the latest.
I think the thing in flux is probably pricing versus production capacity and commitment to making sure all cameras sold have initial cards.. Sony was vague about the EX1 price (under $8000 which could well have be $7999) and now most dealers seem to be settling on $6699 or thereabouts and one dealer tells me Sony has set a "floor" of about $6500. That's around 16-19% lower than it could have been.
The may be underproducing which is different than not ready to produce yet.
Mike Williams November 2nd, 2007, 01:02 PM That is a deal killer for me. I wanted to buy one right away but I can't go out to shoot with one battery!! No chance in hedes. :(
That hurts too. I really wanted one right away. I guess I'll just wait until they have the batts and cards ready to sell.
Mike
Phil Bloom November 7th, 2007, 05:22 PM i have been told to expect my ex1 on Friday...could this be possible?
Paul Ramsbottom November 7th, 2007, 05:44 PM I don't think anyone know's exactly.
BTW, I'm in the US and in line at B&H, somewhere in the top 15 I am told.
I have it on reasonably good authority that the first shipments are already 'ex-factory', which I guess means they have shipped from Japan to the various international locations/distributors.
If one rumor I read was correct, those first shipments went out last week.
If all of that is true, and if the inventory for the UK went air-freight and got through customs quickly, then this Friday wouldn't be impossble. Unlikely but not impossible.
I think the availability of the manuals and drivers and now an update to that software must portend something.
Craig Seeman November 7th, 2007, 05:50 PM AbelCine is showing Card prices now although only "accepting orders"
8GB $485
16GB $875
http://www.abelcine.com/store/product.php?productid=1000401&cat=0&page=1
4hr battery shows as $234
Alan Waters November 7th, 2007, 07:32 PM Ok so have finally decided to spring for the EX1 instead of the HVX200 (the ability to shoot native DV made me undecided) and have the financing setup.
The choice now is wheather to buy in UK, Europe or take a chance on a US one....I have someone to buy it for me and take it back if needed.
the UK price looks like converting to around 6,600 EUR and the US 4,567 EUR...thats a lot of lifference.
Thing stopping me jumping for it right away is things going wrong with it and having to ship it back to person who purchases it for me (messy messy) and US power cables.
Alan Waters November 7th, 2007, 07:41 PM I take it the SxS cards are compatible with the UK model.
What about the 0.8X Wide Angle Adapter, Battery and SxS Memory Reader?
they are much cheaper in the States too.
Brian Leahy November 7th, 2007, 08:11 PM I thought for the us power cables, you would just use some sort of simple cheap socket converter. am i completely wrong?
Craig Seeman November 7th, 2007, 08:21 PM I suspect the "in" to the camera itself is standard but the plug on the other end of the AC adaptor/battery charger will be the variable. If it's like some "modern" power supplies they'll be a detachable plug going to the adaptor and that will be the device that varies in the kit.
The above is just speculation but I just got another device which is both NTSC/PAL to use with the camera (Telestream/Flip4Mac Pipeline) in which the power supply is designed that way.
In the "worst" case you might have to buy a 240V charger (or just the 240V power cable) but the camera itself, including the power input, will likely be the same (just a hunch mind you).
Jiri Bakala November 7th, 2007, 08:35 PM I suspect the "in" to the camera itself is standard but the plug on the other end of the AC adaptor/battery charger will be the variable. They are always dual voltage. If only to allow charging while shooting abroad. So, all one needs is the physical plug adaptor(s) for the respective country.
Serena Steuart November 7th, 2007, 08:35 PM The camera will run off 12v DC. I've been looking for a use for my Arri Ni-Cad brick -- should run the EX for a few days.
Jiri Bakala November 7th, 2007, 10:12 PM Yeah, I have an IDX system with three batteries. It would also be nice if it could be used with the camera. Maybe a dummy battery with an IDX attachement? Has anyone made something like this?
Serena Steuart November 8th, 2007, 02:07 AM There is a separate 12v input and you have to remove the battery, so no dummy required.
Phil Bloom November 8th, 2007, 03:44 AM I take it the SxS cards are compatible with the UK model.
What about the 0.8X Wide Angle Adapter, Battery and SxS Memory Reader?

It's all identical.
The only thing that would put me off is the warranty. Any problems and it is back to the states with it. In the UK you get a loan unit if it takes longer than ten days to fix.
Alan Waters November 8th, 2007, 04:16 AM Yeah I know your right Phil.....2K is a fair hit to take but the whole warranty thing makes me stop from just going for it.
Would be a different thing if talking about say a Canon 1D Mark III which would be handier ship back.....but a camcorder....too dicey.
Time to bite the bullet.....the EX1 is worth it though.....will buy my cards in the States though.
Thats a thing.....I seen the Mods telling off a guy from tipping about cheaper places to get it in earlier posts. As this is an American site pushing American suppliers.....where is the Europeon "Partners" websites or are there any??
Phil Bloom November 8th, 2007, 04:38 AM is it two thousand pounds or dollars difference?
The other thing is of course actually getting hold of one. I think they are going to be pretty scarce to start with. I was told my supplier in London will get first 6 out of 100 on Friday with another dozen to follow the week after. All of their hundred have been allocated.
Interesting to see that videogear.co.uk, one of the dvi sponsors have such a cheap price. Which is odd considering they are not even official Sony dealers and therefore have to buy their stock FROM the official Sony dealers. Can't see how they can be doing them so cheap...
The warranty thing is an issue, but when my B&H photo purchased HDV vtr deck failed I sent it to New Jersey for repair and had it back within two weeks. Sure the customs thing and fedex costs are a pain but perhaps it could work out well...how long is the warranty for this camera in the states?

You can get one in the Netherlands for 5199 incl 2 8 GB cards and no messy cables... It's still not as cheap as in the US but it's 1400 euro's cheaper plus a lot closerby.
Piotr Wozniacki November 8th, 2007, 05:43 AM You can get one in the Netherlands for €5199 incl 2 8 GB cards and no messy cables... It's still not as cheap as in the US but it's 1400 euro's cheaper plus a lot closerby.
Please don't mislead people - the EUR 6,600 is a Gross price (VAT included), while the Eur 5200 is VAT exempt. Anyway, it IS cheaper indeed - but certainly not by 1400 Euros!
Alan Waters November 8th, 2007, 05:53 AM It is neither Phil......it's 2k euro difference.
videogear works out at 6,374 eur which is a bit cheaper but not a lot.
cards work out at 674 eur white 596 in the US.
Hope the shortage does not last too long because the clock and interest start ticking on my credit from next week.
Chris Hurd November 8th, 2007, 08:23 AM I seen the Mods telling off a guy from tipping about cheaper places to get it in earlier posts. As this is an American site pushing American suppliers.....where is the Europeon "Partners" websites or are there any?Refer to http://www.dvinfo.net/sponsors
We have a very good UK / EU dealer listed there. I may add more in the near future.
I started this site as a way to escape the "cheap" mentality. Buying cheap is not a very smart thing to do. Quite often, when you buy "cheap" you'll actually wind up spending more money and time while experiencing more grief and frustration than you would if you had simply bought from a solid, reputable dealer.
Our sponsor's prices are already low, and they're realistic.
Plus, our sponsors make this site possible. Therefore I refer all where-to-buy questions exclusively to them. If all you want is "cheap," there are plenty of other sites on the web for that. Cheap can be a rip-off and that's the primary reason why we don't speak "cheap" on this site.
Please support the dealers which support DV Info Net. Thanks,

the reason I went with buying here was simply zero percent finance over two years
Alan Waters November 8th, 2007, 09:59 AM Well three things....
Firstly I really like this site and it is one I visit every day so well done on creating it and providing a wealth of information to all of us users.
Secondly If I wanted cheap I'd buy a handicam second hand.....considering spending 4k-6k + on a cam and not trying to get the > best deal < ..ie "cheap"er than the VAT rates etc here is just plain silly.
Thirdly.....I cannot spot any europeon sponsors here??

But they arent official Sony dealers so not ideal for buying an xdcam ex from

Chris,
I may be overlooking it but I really cant find videogear or any other european dealer listed in that link.
It would be a great idea to add non-UK dealers too due to the GBP/EUR rate. Hope you find them because I really searched for them and didnt.
Chris Hurd November 8th, 2007, 12:56 PM I may be overlooking it but I really cant find videogear or any other european dealer listed in that link. What the heck? You're not overlooking anything -- it's not even there! Boy do I have a lot of work to do.

Did you get it Phil?
Chuck Wall November 9th, 2007, 10:14 AM Got a call from the vendor I pre-ordered from, they were told ex1 will ship on 19th to them and I am early enough on the list to get one from that shipment.
Should see either just before or just after thanksgiving.
Memory card 499 8gb 899 16gb and larger batteries available!
Chuck
Eric Pascarelli November 9th, 2007, 10:46 AM Just got that same call.
Excellent news.

am told next week now!
Paul Ramsbottom November 9th, 2007, 02:44 PM "Camcorders will ship to dealers next week"
Assuming you just got that email from Lee, it's actually slightly different information. Chuck's vendor said they would ship to dealers wc 11/19, Lee is saying they will ship wc 11/12, which would be very good news for me (unless dealers are embargoed for customer ship until the 19th).
