Anyone know an effect for "ghosting" an image - for instance; a dancer moving at 80% speed while her movements have "trails".

Effects>Video Filters>Time>Trails (and maybe the other two)
You can also do this by duplicating the layer (possibly multiple times) then offsetting it a few frames and changing the opacity as desired (as well as perhaps adding blur).

is it possible that you have some third party plug ins installed? Because I don't have "time" under video filters.

Look again...I found it near the bottom of the hierarchal list of effects.

I'm absolutely sure I don't have it. Now I feel cheated!!

What version of FCP do you have? I'm using 5.1. Maybe it moved. (Or, if v. 4 or before, might not have it.)
If you still can't find it, maybe you should use the method I described before with layering.

I have FCP 5.1.4 - I was able to get close enough with motion blur. Thanks Daniel - on both problems.

See this attachment. I can't believe you don't have it if you have 5.1.4. I do too, and I haven't installed any external plugins.

I would like to have that "trails" filter too - but I don't - see below:

I have FCP v5.1.4. What's going on here, anyone?

( I also notice I haven't got some others shown above too: like the "Tiling" group? )

That's weird. The only external plugin in my list is a demo from RE:Vision.

You have a lot of plugins there, so maybe it got readjusted as you installed them?

I didn't do anything special with this. Just installed right from the CD.

I have FCS 1. Do you guys have the standalone? (Do they even make a standalone of FCP now or just FCE?)

Just searched the PDF manual for "trails" and then "tiling" - found nothing either time. :(

This is standalone FCP v5.1.4. Maybe these were introduced with the FCS bundle?

Hmmm. Just found this article (http://www.larryjordan.biz/articles/lj_trail_effects.html) which implies "Trails" came in with v.5.1.2. I must investigate further...

I wonder if it's related to the fact that I am running an older machine (G4 Dual 1.42GHz), which won't, for example, run Motion?

I have trails, and Tiling which consists of two filters.

This is so STRANGE!!!

Make sure you have "All" filters available; see attached.

How do you post thumbnails, instead of attatchments on DVI?

I do. Curiouser and curiouser.

Manage attachments - upload an image - ?

(Maybe the forum doesn't thumbnail TIFFs, or files that are too big?)

If you don't have those filters displayed it may have to do with the fact that they are GPU based and require a graphics card capable of running Motion.

I think that's it, Nate - thanks!

I know for a fact my Dual 1.42GHz G4 doesn't have a graphics card capable of running Motion. Now I need that date for the upcoming MacPro speed bumps even more!
