View Full Version : Sumix Corp. present GiGe camera with Altasens 2/3" sensor
Serge Victorovich September 10th, 2007, 07:17 AM The SMX-12A2 Series are 2 megapixel CMOS cameras with the Gigabit Ethernet interface and Full HD 1080/60p resolution (1920 x 1080).
The SMX-12A2 Series cameras are available in two models: color (SMX-12A2C) and monochrome (SMX-12A2M).

Now we need Cineform capture application for CineformRAW;)
Jack Zhang September 10th, 2007, 08:36 AM The big Con: Rolling Shutter.
When will we have a global shutter HD camera again?
John Wyatt September 11th, 2007, 03:51 AM Sounds interesting -- GigE surely the way to go. Could not see the max mhz speed of the sensor on that Sumix page: high speed would help rolling shutter.
Farhad Towfiq September 11th, 2007, 01:41 PM Max mhz speed is 150. 1080p at 60 fps, 8 bit. However for 12 bit every other frame can be transfered to PC. Compression is lossless 2-1
This is perhaps the fastest GigaE Altasens 2/3" in the market. Please correct me if not so.
Eric Gorski September 12th, 2007, 04:27 AM wonder how much this goes for.. would be nice for some high-speed recording.
Heath McKnight September 12th, 2007, 06:35 AM Lots of pixels on the image sensor (two megapixels).
I'm losing track of all the boutique camera companies coming out, or hoping to come out with new cameras. I think RED and SI2K started something. To be honest, I'm more interested in what the "vets" like RED and SI2K have to offer than anything else.
And of course, what the big four (Sony, JVC, Canon and Panasonic) have next for us.

Farhad Towfiq September 12th, 2007, 08:58 AM Heath, two megapixels raw is not that bad. It can be interpolated. Certainly enough for HDTV. 4 megapixel 4 CMOS and single CMOS designs are on the drawing boards. Sumix was first company that sold USB 2.0 cameras. Sumix USB 2.0 cameras still have frame rate performance edge of 20-30% over all other commercial USB 2.0 cameras with same sensors. We are at least as Vet as RED or SI if not more.
SMX-12A2C is for DIY users and not competing with RED and SI2K. We will sell only the camera head, provide all functionality of the sensor to the users and let them do the integration and make their own special camera. Creativity of users can result in fantastic effects that neither RED nor better cameras can reproduce.
Eric, We are converging on the price of $2K for SMX-12A2C for DIY users and limitted to one. For OEM industrial users the price will be higher.
Heath McKnight September 12th, 2007, 09:10 AM Farhad,
I was impressed with the pixels, trust me! The F900 had around 1.5 million (more or less) pixels.
What's the price on the camera? Do you get storage with it?

Farhad Towfiq September 12th, 2007, 10:56 AM Heath,
Thank you for correcting the misunderstanding. In any case more pixels to some extend is better. By the way I found "boutique camera companies" term very smart. Does it apply to where Santa Clause looks for gifts by request for his very wealthy devotees? In that case it applies better to RED. Sumix lets the engineers decide what can an must be done and how it should be done. We usually design core technologies for other companies.
Heath McKnight September 12th, 2007, 11:26 AM I wasn't trying to be insulting, but I learned the term from both production companies (the majors and the boutiques) and visual FX/computer animation companies (ILM and the boutiques--I first heard that term associated with Blue Sky, which was a boutique until ICE AGE came out).
You must understand that I hear about planned cameras all the time, and sometimes I can't help but feel exhausted. (grin)
As usual, I'm excited to learn more!
