Loren,

Whilst they will work and look, inexpensive the bulbs are going to kill you in the end.

A photoflood bulb only has a life of 4 hours at best, I was using some on a shoot (in a China Ball) and some did not last an hour. You probably know where I am going with this… more expensive lights will save money in the long run. They are more controllable and will last him a lifetime.
That said a 5in1 reflector some formcore and gaffers tape with a good book on lighting will go further in making a production look more professional than just buying a light.
