I've got the Sony Z1, I've had a search around and I need to capture footage from the Camera to the PC, what Firewire cards do you use...
I know you need a I.Link, what cable excally do I need for that?

Robert, you don't need a capture card, per se. You just need a computer with a firewire port. Or add a firewire card if you have a computer without one.

Other than that, you need some kind of editing software that can handle either capturing DV (which most of them can) if you are using your camera to output DV (or downconverted HDV), or HDV directly.

Both capture just fine over firewire.

Ya that i. Link(firewire) cable is not the kind that you are going to need to connect your camera to a firewire port on your computer/firewire card. There should be one that came with your camera that is 4 pin to 6 pin and your computer should have a 6 pin firewire input somewhere. The 4 pin side is what goes into that little outlet in between your battery and the record button.

Thanks for the reply, no cable for connecting to the PC came with the Z1 - so I've ordered the 4pin to 6 pin and Firewire card.

Be careful when you connect and disconnect the firewire cable, particularly on the camera side.

Always do that with the camera off. It was surprising to me when I heard stories of people blowing the 1394 interface on their cameras, which is an expensive repair to do.

An isolating cable wouldn't be a bad idea.
