Dominik Gehring September 4th, 2007, 04:33 AM i've done a short clip for my showreel some weeks ago and i was amazed
about the xha1...never could play with DOF like that before with my pd-170!

Jerrod Cordell September 4th, 2007, 08:09 AM Woah. That was freaky, not gonna lie. lol.
You got DOF shots like that without a 35mm adapter? Wow. That was really good. Heh, when I saw "Love My Pet" I was like "hmmm, well this is gonna be another cute clip of a puppy, or a kitty or something." Definitely threw me off guard. lol. But good job man.
Jim Miller September 4th, 2007, 08:19 AM That was a little unsettling! Loved the effects and textures you used. Were they just overlays or did you use a bump map? Nice use of color too. Great editing.
Dominik Gehring September 4th, 2007, 08:50 AM @Jerrod
lol- thx...yes it's without 35mm adapter..but i had a shooting last saturday with
a letus35fe, but will make a post about that later...btw first i liked to have her hold a big dead fish...but friends convienced me that this would be 2 much.(still not shure about that...lol)
@Jim
the texures were just overlayed with composite mode...
Jerrod Cordell September 4th, 2007, 09:52 AM I don't know. I liked the rat. It seemed creepier than a dead fish. A dead fish would probably just make me laugh. lol.
Dominik Gehring September 4th, 2007, 09:59 AM maybe...but i think not on the one i had in mind...lol
Trish Kerr September 4th, 2007, 02:47 PM very well done creep factor. I'd say you're ready for Silent Hill.
Trish
Carlos Flores September 4th, 2007, 10:54 PM That was really impressive! May I ask how do you exactly make those shaky transitions and effects? are they done manually, or with a plugin? Thanks in advance.
Doug Davis September 4th, 2007, 11:29 PM Kids always add such a high 'creep' factor... Nice video... Very original... What NLE?
Dominik Gehring September 5th, 2007, 02:38 AM @dough - i use fcp 5.1.4 - thx
@carlos - i made it manually and then worked with speed changes in fcp...dont know if it is a good 2 do that now with the letus adapter and a heavy lens..lol -maybe i have to get a stable rodsupport system first...
Noa Put September 5th, 2007, 03:30 AM i've done a short clip for my showreel some weeks ago and i was amazed

It looks very good, I had the feeling that the dof was enhanced during editing using masks and blur? Can you give some more info on the effects you used?
Dominik Gehring September 5th, 2007, 04:00 AM all the blur was done in camera...no special fx, only fcp cc and a lot of editing...
Noa Put September 5th, 2007, 07:54 AM all the blur was done in camera...no special fx, only fcp cc and a lot of editing...
That's cool, when you refer to blur in camera, you just turn the focus ring to get a blurry image? Where there specific settings you used for the camera?
Dominik Gehring September 5th, 2007, 08:24 AM @noa - yes i had the zoom and focus speed on high in the prefs plus i used the panalook preset because it fitted well for my needs in this particular situation...
Dennis Murphy September 5th, 2007, 03:38 PM That was damn beautiful!
Seriously, I love that kind of editing and vibe.
Jerrod Cordell September 5th, 2007, 11:51 PM I do have a question though. What were those symbols at the end? And was that just me, or did I see a faded image of Jesus doing a peace sign?
Trent Humphrey September 6th, 2007, 09:39 PM could you please share your encoding methods to get outstanding quality. also could you explain your process of editing and what settings were used. not to apply effects but the general capture to final product uploaded. Software used and codecs etc....
thank you in advance. it looked really good

I agree... this info would be helpful.
Cheers,
Dennis.
Dominik Gehring September 7th, 2007, 08:23 AM @jerrod - the symols are the logos from the company i work, my logo for the non-commercial artsy-stuff, and the logo from the graphicdesiger i work with...
...and ehh yes there is an image of jesus. i was looking for an old book on the
flewmarket and there i found this 100year old Bible...
@trent - its just h264 single pass 5000Kbit/s...IMO the best codec arround those days...
not shure what u exatly want to know else...4 cam settings look at the previous
posts in this thread...finalcut was just normal hdv capture & timline.
so if u still have a specific question - feel free 2ask

Zach Stewart September 7th, 2007, 09:16 AM great work. loved the folded paper look. is this something you filmed and just matted out or is it a product that can be found/bought? also the time remapping and camera shakes were these done in FCP or After Effects?
Sound Effects - i hear a slide projector or is that a page turning (either way i like it)? also what music are you using for this piece? sorry for all the questions but i really liked the style and is generating tons of ideas....
Kajito Nagib September 8th, 2007, 12:03 AM excellent work my friend:-)
Monish Bansal September 9th, 2007, 12:47 PM nice editing gr8 video quality :), was this shot HD or HDV
Dominik Gehring September 9th, 2007, 01:28 PM @ zach - the texture is filmed and overlayed in composite mode...like written
earlyer in this thread its all done in fcp...the sound is the actual noise of turning paper.
@ monish - it is filmed with the xha1..so its hdv.

Nick Colombini September 9th, 2007, 06:11 PM really nice compositions, colors and cutting. It's great to see what can be done with a little ingenuity and imagination. you should take this style and situation and try to build a story around it, could be cool as a 5 min short.
Dominik Gehring September 13th, 2007, 04:22 PM @nick -thanks- ...a little short is exactly what we are doing right now, but with an other style and location. it's the first test also with our new 35mm adapter because i have to shoot a commercial in two weeks. btw speaking from nice locations and compositions...very nice work in your abstract short also!
