I hadn't used my HD1a for a few months. Sure enough, when I fired it up the screen remained blank except for playback, and it didn't make the little click indicating the mask inside the lens had opened. Well, it's not a delicate olde worlde mechanical transport I thought, I'll try the hard man technique and give it a gentle whack with my hand on the right hand side. It worked and after a few power cycles with the same problem, and a gentle tap each time, it now fires up OK. Corporal punishment works...
