First of all I must say that I`m not a video scientist or professional. I just enjoy a lot of video and photography and mainly I rely on what my eyes capture from our world. Previously I had a JVC HD 100 and now I have a Canon A1 and I`m very happy with it.
Based on Tim Dashwood settings for JVC HD 100, on what I have read on Steve Mullen book (JVC HD 100 Handbook), on Panalook preset for Canon A1 and on my eyes, I finally achieved what seems to be a good all purpose preset for PAL users. My settings are:

L Gain -3Db; M Gain 0Db; H Gain 6Db

I find night shots with vivid colors and good latitude and with 6Db gain there is no noise.

I hadn't realised that PAL cameras produced a different look to NTSC cameras, would that explain why I can't seem to get my footage to look like others have posted using the VIVIDRGB presets etc?

The colours seem to look a lot more contrasty and a little harsh in comparison to what I'm seeing from across the pond.

Yes, I'm interested to know why a PAL A1 would be different (preset wise) from an NTSC one.

It seems highly unlikely that PAL cameras are any different to NTSC ones but, having said that, I must admit that in its default condition, my A1 produces very (colour) unsaturated pictures -- so much so that I still wonder if it's normal??

Before launching this preset I tried the VIVID and Panalook presets and I felt VIVID very saturated and contrasty. Panalook was almost good but it lacks some latitude. I have no doubt that for PAL cameras things are somewhat different. I hope all of you enjoy this preset.

I was using your preset yesterday and I do like the results. I'm just guessing but maybe there's a difference in the natural light conditions in Europe - aren't there a lot of painters travel to Spain, Italy and France always on the search for the best light?

In fact light conditions in countries like Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece are very good, specially in autumn and spring (amazing soft light) and this make colors very vivid and bright. I already used my preset at Brussels and the results were very good. I advise to set color temperature at 6100 - 6600K when sun shines very much the skies are deeply blue and the surroundings have many grey buildings. Otherwise set your color temperature at 5600K on normal daylight conditions. Glad to know you enjoyed this preset!
