Yep, I know, I know... I've said I'm not happy with the V1U's audio several times (and I STILL think it could be hotter), but it did save my butt yesterday.
I did a nice little verbal essay yesterday evening for one of my local TV shows and -- totally my fault -- had not checked the setting of the mike channel switch. I had my AT897 shotgun mike set for both channels, so my wireless mike was not being picked up.
So all my glorious ad-libbed verbal riff was recorded by the shotgun at about -40 db (I was 15-20 feet from the camera). However, the V1U came through. I boosted the audio 38db in post, threw in a lowpass filter to tone down the crickets, and got a usable segment after all.

A good camera, above all, should be tolerant of operator mistakes and the V1U is. ;-)
