D100 Results - No Light Loss, No Grain, Horrendous Bokeh

Alright,
The D100 shows great lack of light loss, great lack of grain, and the in-focus material is the sharpest I've ever seen. But the bokeh is pretty undesirable. I'll let the results speak for themselves.

Hey Ben

You might want to try sticking two of your diffusers together face to face. You'll get the bokeh you want but possibly at the expense of sharpness and grain.

Ben Winter July 1st, 2006 10:44 AM

I was going to try that--I think I'll find some less powerful diffuser gel material and glue it up against the D100 screen.

What about the D200s screen? lol stupid question - i dont think it will make any difference, its just the next model

Ben, how about shooting some out-of focus-lights at night?

Toenis Liivamaegi July 5th, 2006 07:08 AM

Ben, can you give us the dimensions of that D100 screen? Does it have any tabs or the like?

T

Sorry for not being around for a while, I've been busy trying to get my new Opteron system up and running...turns out you need *purely ECC registered* RAM for it...won't run on plain unbuffered...*mumbles*...like owning a BMW, eats only Premium gas...

Yes, I'll try to shoot out of focus lights at night with it, although I'll have to switch it back in to the Letus, (had to switch it back out for a shoot). No, it has no tabs, and is a hair's breadth bigger than a 35mm still slide in all directions.

I just got Nikon D100 replacement screen from ImageGallery and it measures 36mm in width and 25mm in height to be exact.
And as Ben stated it is absolutely clear and comes for 1/4th of the price of a Beattie screen.
Quick observational test showed that it`s frensel isn`t as fine as Beattie`s and it will possibly show more chromatic abberations than a Beattie would but I guess it wouldn`t be a problem in real life applications.

Next week I might be able to show some HVX200 test clips with D100 vs Beattie.

Ben, if you gotta switch it out, before you do, shoot an A:B test with whatever is in your Letus now! :-)

Toenis, sounds awesome, can't wait to see a comparo of those two too.

So far I´ve done visual tests with Beattie for Contax, Nikon D100 and Canon precision matte microlens screens and it seems that Canon is the only one with nice sharp bokeh but then again it really depends on what lens I put on my adaptor.
I´ll post some samples next week.

I´ve been also wondering what would happen to Canon screen when one adds Maxwell`s coating to it.

Toenis, which Canon screen in particular are you using? Just curious. I've done tests with the Nikon D and I'm trying to get one of the D100 screens to try out also. I've looked at the Canon screens but they've all got focusing circles or other markings.

We had long duett about it in Light loss versus nice bokeh? thread.

Mike Oveson August 9th, 2006 11:58 AM

Thanks Frank. I appreciate it.
