Re: Scratch built Not Parabolic Relector....
Semi-parabolic?
How does it sound? Perhaps this method could be applied to a bigger bowl... |
Re: Scratch built Not Parabolic Relector....
The Mic is a Senni shottie capsule that here is depending on the reflected audio hitting the flat area of the bowl. So not a para. But the audio gets scooped and vibrates the flat area.
How does it work? I’m getting the audio of a soft clicking digital clock, in a garden surrounded by reflecting brick walls from 5 metres. Proof of this is that when I rotate the gizmo by 90 degrees off axis, the clock tick has gone. I had made a prototype back in 1978. This time I believe I’ve done it almost right. |

Is it Tupperware? Those things have a lifetime warranty. :P
Anyway, this is so deserving of an award, so here you are. Andrew |
Re: Scratch built Not Parabolic Relector....
I’m so pumped! I’d like to thank my Parents, Mr Smith my Physics Master, the Royal Society Christmas Lectures....
OK, Andrew, I’m gonna print off your kindly offered AWARD and stick it to outside bottom of the bowl. |
Re: Scratch built Not Parabolic Relector....
Nice work Graham. Can you post a few audio samples?

It may be dangerous to incite him....But, I always laugh at Andrew's posts. No one has been able to quip with humor like him on this board since Don Bloom retired!

Re: Scratch built Not Parabolic Relector....
Hi Folks!
Well, this has been a Journey, and no mistake. OK, I wanted to execute as best as I could an evidence based results scenario. Aim: To determine if there is a benefit in using my Sound Scoop. Experimental Parameters: 1/- Hardware Used: All recording were made from my Parabolic via this nifty Saramonic SmartRig+ preamp into my Canon. I am able to monitor audio IN from the Saramonic SmartRig+. Neato! 2/- Ambient Scenario: The Audio source was placed some 4 metres away from the Parabolic. Many reflections severly tested the process and at one the time there were two helos were flying over . . . 3/- Audio Levels: The Primary sound source measured as -40dB at one metre and -70dB halfway between Source and camera. At the camera the sound source was just discernible to my ears. 4/- Testing Iterations: I tested by line of sight pointing the OPEN Bowl towards the Sound Source. I then rotated by 90degs away from the Source and then returned to On-Axis with the Sound source. I repeated at least 30 times. Results: I have determined in using Vegas Pro I can achieve a clean, ticking at -18db and when rotating 90degs AWAY from the Source I'm achieving very little Signal at all. Conclusion: The Para-Bowl works. It works on a source that is both soft in nature and challenged by ambient reflections. I'm providing the "Sample" that was produced out of VegasPro16. I know my gathering and monitoring wouldn't stand up to close, critical, Empirical measuring and I provide my results as-is. The scientific approach could very well be sharpened-up or even substituted for an even better one. My enthusiasm was what has pushed me forward, driven by a wish to share with you all even these simplest of tests. Cheers Grazie PS: I would share the WAV but DVInfo isn't taking it . . ? It's way below the WAV limit too. |

Grazie, send it to me via email please! I'll be sure it gets posted.

Forum attachment trouble due to server issues, my apologies. I've added the clip to our DropBox. Here's the direct download link:
