iriver for dummies?

I know there are dozens of threads here about recording with the iriver. But I can't find one that tells me how to work the thing! Talk about frustrating; this little gadget (795, plus I got a Giant Squid mic) doesn't work like anything I've ever seen. And the manual! Don't get me started about that. :)

For now, what I'm needing are step-by-step instructions on how to record. I'll worry about importing the mp3 later.

That sounds like the generals of operating your critter. The podcast is another critter all together, and not something you will need to worry over.

Biggest thing about the iRiver is learning the quirky control.

Fast press
SLow press (hold for a second)
LONG press (hold until it responds)

This is true for buttons and toggle (both pushing and pressing)

Fast press button 1 gets you out of whatever you are doing, like escape key on computer.

SLow press button 3 to get it into mode-changing mode, then select (using toggle) line-in for external mic or mic for internal mic Then exit.

Fast press button 3 to record. fast press again to stop.

LONG press toggle in center position ot get into control mode to change settings on everything. Then toggle thru menus.

Getting the knack of the three ways to press a button or toggle, and you are 95% of the way there. It gets fairly easy after that, but still a bit of a challenge to remember. I have to relearn it every time I use it. ALways try a fast, then slow, then long press while experimenting.

I have a Giant Squid mic and an iRiver 895 and I took the time to write myself some "Dummie's" directions... :-)

Here are the notes I use (I'm glad I had these at a wedding I filmed a couple of months ago... because I would have definitely missed something since I don't use the iRiver enough to remember the settings). These settings worked quite well for me to get clean audio.

***SETTINGS***

Timer (manual section 5-17)

- Sleep power off - OFF / Beep OFF
- Stop Power off - 60 min

Control - (manual section 5-22)

- Line in recording mode:
Mono
44.1KHz
160 Kbps

- Line In Rec Volume: 50

- Line In Auto Sync: OFF

- Line In / Ext Mic: EXT MIC

***SETUP***

1. Connect mic to line-in jack
2. Set line in rec mode as above (SETTINGS)
3. Press and HOLD "Mode/Rec" button
4. Select Line-In mode
5. Press "Nav/Menu" button to go to PAUSED record mode
6. Press REC
7. Engage the LOCK!

***STOPPING***

1. Unlock
2. Press "Mode/Rec" button
3. Press and HOLD the STOP button

It just keeps getting harder! But I'm sure glad you guys showed me this stuff now, before I tore my hair out trying it on my own. There is no way I could figure this out, and the flippin' manual, for me, was no help at all. I'll print these posts and see what I can do before this Saturday's wedding. Thank you!!

Nice thing is once you get it set, it holds the setting even when changing the battery.

This was posted in another thread, and is what taught me how to use mine in a few minutes. I can't remember who posted it, so sorry I can't give him credit.

7/line in recording volume(set at about 45 to 50)as a trial
press left button on top again to exit
slide face button down you get
8/line in auto slide button down again
9/line in /ext this is where you set mic input or line level input
you do this by sliding the face button left or right
press the left top button 3 times to exit the menu's and your ready to record.
press the right top button to start recording
sorry about the long post ,I felt I needed the room to make things clear.Hope I did

Picked up a iRiver 795 and Giant Squid.. Did some tests.. However it must be me, as the audio sounds heavy on the bass side of things something similiar to the sounds of it being muffled.. I checked all the EQ settings and they are normal.. I followed the guide as posted here..

Any suggestions I might have over looked? I am using line-in mono with ext. mic..

Are you sure you have actived the ext mic mode? what kind of file extension is being created?

Try some different mic placements.

I posted this on another iRiver thread and I didn't get an answer. I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I too have looked at a lot of iRiver threads and that's how I heard about the Giant Squid mics.

Before I order the mic I'm trying to figure out if I need a powered mic or not. I would guess that the iRiver does not have phantom power, but the photo of the Giant Squid mic the suggest for use with the iRiver doesn't llok like it has the battery pac some of the Giant Squid mics have.

Pat, the quickest way to make sure your settings are correct is to cover the little voice mic on the unit and speak into your lav. Should be pretty clear. Once you're sure it's working correctly, then Bob is right--mic placement seems to be everything on this.

Marion, you don't need a powered mic, and the suggested Giant Squid is not powered.

or see if it creates a .rec file (correct) or .aud (internal mic)
