MKH70 - problem?
 

Just got a new MKH70 delivered from Sennheiser directly. "B" stock mic. Full warranty, tested, as new, bla bla bla. Hooked it up via XLR to the Tascam HD-P2 and I get nothing. Other mics fine - 418s, Me66. Hooked it up the the camera, same thing. Nothing. Which one is the dud here, me or the mic? What am I missing (besides sound)?

Phantom power?

Yeah, checked that. Phantom power ON, and OFF, for both the recorder and the camera. 418s works perfectly on both. I don't get it either..

I'd check it on one other device (camera, recorder, mixer, etc.), but it does seem like you may have a problem with the mic itself.

Thanks for the help guys. I swapped cables, cameras, recorders, settings. I even changed my sneakers. Nothing doing. I think it's a dud.

I recommend the following test:

1. Turn off the Tascam HD-P2 phantom power.

2. Hook up a 48 volt phantom powered microphone (not the ME66).

3. Turn on the Tascam and phantom power.

4. Test the mic.

5. If it works, then

6. Turn off phantom power.

7. Using the same cable hook up the MKH-70.

8. Turn on phantom power.

9. Test the mic.

10. If it does not work, I feel that you have a inoperative MKH-70. If this is the case contact Sennheiser.


Note: It is good practice to always turn off phantom power before connecting or disconnecting a microphone.
