If you tried re-installing it and it still does the same thing, it's obviously not anything in the program. What kind of things have you changed since this has started to happen? Any new hardware/software, etc?

Adobe Mpeg encoder Probs HELP!!
I encoded my 30 minute documentary yesterday and much to my dismay (after 22 hours of rendering) the audio gradually lost sync. Towards the end of the doc it was about 5 seconds off. Is there a more stable encoder. Also, I can use TMPEG. The question is what kind of file should I out put the premiere project to that is TMPEG freindly. It didn't like microsoft DV. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Once i had problems also and reinstalling did not help.
I did it again but removed/deleted the personal settings for Premiere. I work with Win XP and found them under documents and settings - Application Data - Adobe - Premiere. May be it will help for you too. Jan |
I use the latest MPEG encoder form Adobe and it never let me down. It has very well improved. I prefer this encoder now above TMPGenc.
For TMPGenc you must go to options- VFAPI plug-in and raise the priority for direct Show Multimedia File Reader to 1 (or2) to work with Adobe and Win XP. ( I work with win XP) |
I'm thinking of getting the mainconcept standalone. It looks stable and main concept has never let me down.
I need to also check the sampling I guess to make sure the rates are the same. I forgot to include my system specs: Dell 4550 P4 2.4ghz 1GB Ram Prem 6.5 Sony DRU-500A DVD burner. Vegas DVD Arch (maybe vegas doesn't like adobe?? hehe) |
Pic in Pic
Anyone know if in Adobe Premiere 6.5 you can do a Pic in Pic or mix two video sources together to appear together on the screen? I have seen it done briefly at a Video Fair, but it was on Pinnacle Edition I believe. So is there a way to do it on Premiere 6.5??
Thanks! |
Also once you mix these footage together can you re-size one smaller and have the other one full screen or use up the rest of the space. Kind of like the split screen stuff of 24, or like sports converage, etc.

Cristopher- Depending on the complexity of what you are trying to achieve, it can be real simple. I would lay the clip that you want to be full screen in track 2. The clip to be displayed as a PIP goes in track 1. In the clips properties, select motion setup. This will allow you to resize and position it however you want, showing track 2 as a background behind it. It will take some playing to get it the way you want, but not too awful. Of course, there are other ways to do it, this is just the method I use most.
|
By the way, what you want to attempt is monkey work using Adobe After Effects. It's too easy.
|
Problem Solved. I switched to the MainConcept Codec and MPEG Encoder. This thing is unreal. It save the file that took the Adobe encoder 22 hours in 31 minutes. The audio is in sync and the resulting picture on the burned DVD is incredible.
I would recommend this combination to anyone based on my results. |
Do you mean that you switched to the DV-codec form mainconcept? Is it an improvement?
Does the standalone version render better MPeg as the pugin version? Jan |
Thanks for your help Keiths!!!!
Yeah I wish I had After Effects, but alas money a bit tight at moment. I'll give it a try using motion set-up. Last time I tried something with that it seemed to just crop the image...but probably did something wrong. |
PIP
You can definitely use the motion filter, but an easier way would be to just drop a square wipe transition between the clips and use the position dot in the settings screen to place frame where you want it. Just make sure both values are the same so it doesn't jump.
|
I find the easiest way to do Pic in Pic with Premiere is to use the Transform Filter in the video folder Distort. This way you can scale down as much or as little as you want. You also have more control over where you want the 'picture' to be placed - because you use the monitor window in premiere to place where you want it to appear.
If however you want it to appear from left to right I would use the motion control. Hope this helps, Ed Smith |
Hey Jan,
I updated to the MC DV codec and I got the standalone MPEG encoder. As far as I could see the quality is better and the speed that it performs is amazing. |
Thanks for all the replies. I actually did re install the program, but it had no effect at all. I then went and checked if my other adobe products were functioning. For some reason after I opened photoshop and acrobat, premiere started working again. Strange.....

Exporting to Quicktime using Premiere
I've been playing around with exporting into Quicktime and have gotten some beautiful finished products. Unfortunately, the filesize is gargantuan. When I start to toy with the settings to bring it down to a manageable - i.e. downloadable - size, the quality drops far below where I need it.
Now, I've seen many a Quicktime movies, all of which are at a better length:size ratio than I can get... any thoughts on export settings? Or perhaps some third party programs that would help? As usual, any help is loved... Shane |
In that case I will gonna try this do!
Thanks. Jan |
Use Sorenson codec for QuickTime. That's what the Apple/trailers use. Also, check out Cleaner. It comes as a plugin for Premiere or as a stand alone product. Cleaner helps optimize better than fiddling with it in Premiere.
|
They may share the same .dlls and other system resources. Perhaps when you restarted using the other products those .dlls were somehow 'refreshed'?
|
well all I am after is having pic smaller or perhaps just half screen with the rest filled with other video. Im not after any movement from left to right. Juts for both images set "solid" in their place with the movement of the film being the only movement. Hence I tried the motion thing, but the image moved right to left as the footage was panning left to right...so it looked very confusing and poor.
So I'll give Ed's tip a try. Thanks for ur help. If anyone has any nice websites or step by step explanations I would be greatful. And one other thing...If you buy software hide the manual, cos u never know who's going to accidently put it in the bin (trashcan). Arrrrh!!! |
Editing frame mode in Premiere
Quick question. I did a search and couldn't find anything specific. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough...
I'm shooting a movie in frame mode with the Canon XL1s. When I export this movie, the default frame rate already is 29.97. So, since the Canon frame mode is 30fps, should I change it to 30fps? I'm confused because of this statement by Bill Ravens in another thread: ------------- "no matter how you slice it, the XL1s shoots in interlaced mode, ONLY. Normal mode is standard 60i with one field captured every 1/60 sec. Movie mode is interlaced with 2 fields captured simultaneaously every 1/30 sec." ------------- Question #1. So is frame mode still 29.97? Or is it really 30fps? Question #2. According to Bill's statment, frame mode is still interlaced, so should I export as lower fields first? Or do I export as "no fields"? Thanks in advance. |
I can't help you with the frame rate question as my camera is PAL, but as for exporting it depends on your final destination. If it's for TV then "lower field first" is what I use. If it's for CD/Web then I deinterlace before export.
|
When using Premiere to export footage for the web, you're only going to get Good Quality/Huge File size, or Low Quality/Small File size.
It wasn't until I purchased the full version of Sorenson Squeeze (which includes the full Sorenson codec) that I got great results with low file size. The full version of Cleaner works better as well. You get more control and both offer 2 pass VBR which is going to get you the quality you see on those Apple trailers. (it also helps that most of those trailers are shot on 35mm ;) ) |
The Cleaner plug-in (Cleaner EZ) only comes with Premiere 6.0, where it formed the Save For web module. It was dropped in version 6.5. You can get good compression/quality with Cleaner EZ, but the default settings are preety crappy, and the app doesn't remember your custom settings.
The full version of Cleaner (current version is XL for Windows) is very powerful. Coupled with the Sorenson Pro codec you get very good compression/quality. Beware, though, that the Sorenson codec gives a blocky out put on large areas of flat colour, especially red. |
I own both a DVX100 and a GL-1 (which shares the XL-1s's "frame mode"). Regardless of what supposed frame rate it shoots at DV can only handle 60i/29.97fps. So treat it just as you would normal 29.97 interlaced footage. The only accpetion would be when shooting in 24p mode and your working with an NLE that can remove the pull-down to revert it "back" to true 24p.
|
ok thanks guys. So if I want to export out my footage to After Effects or another program, it asks me to choose the field order. I'm still confused as to whether or not frame mode is actually interlaced or not. (seems to be debate there). My footage seems to be fine when I choose no fields, but I just wanted to make sure that was the case. thanks
|
Well I shoot a lot of stuff in frame mode (XL1s PAL) and use Premiere as of late. So do I still need to deinterlace? I tried a bit section deinterlaced and it seemed to get the jagged teeth even though it was done in frame mode.
I just edit and export to DV as normal. Is this correct? Or am I going to the bother of shooting in Fames mode for the NLE to mess it all up and interlace it. Are there any special tweeks that need to be done for deinterlacing? or do I just put in on timeline for Standard PAL 16bit, edit and export to DV or save movie DV standard to export later??? Any words of wisdom or experience with XL1s frame mode would be very much appreciated! |
Thanks ya'll, good things to know
|
You can also start premiere in a special mode where it will remove
all user settings and reset everything back. I think you need to hold ctrl+shift when starting Premiere. Try that. |
I have tried Cleaner XL on my PC just recently but I must say it
is a horrible product to and install. It had to install Real media (yikes) and I can't get it to read my DV material (have to convert it first). For our Lady X Films I tried a bit with Vegas 4 and got some nice results with: - QuickTime 5 Sorenson 3 codec - Max datarate at 75 (expirement with this) - Natural keyframes - 320x180 - Sound: IMU 4:1 codec @ 22.050 khz 16 bit stereo With this setup I can compress PAL footage 25 fps for 7.5 minutes in 30 mb. If I go down to 15 fps I can get some more but this can make a movie choppy. |
I agree that the XL install is less than ideal. Not only does it force the excreble Real onto your system, but it requires several other items to be installed, but kicks out when it finds them absent. Most installs will add the items that you need as you go along. Since they're included on the XL CD there really is no excuse. But, ther you go.

Exporting from Premiere
I would like to export to tape from Premiere and would like that to be done to Mini DV. Can a project be sent to a camera and be exported on long play without changing the export settings in Premiere?
|
well if you want to export it to tape the easiest way I have found it to hook up your camera and then press play and then press record on the camera. It will export live to the camera, just make sure you prerender out your areas of the video that need to be rendered or it will appear with the red x over the top of it.
Rob:D |
You shouldn't have to change any settings in Premiere. I imagine you'd just set your camera to long play. I'd test it out first though.
|
long play
Thank you for the answers. It worked fine. I wasn't sure if that was all that needed to be done but it worked great!

Interlacing visible in Windows Media Player but not in Premiere
I recently imported some test footage from my PV-DV852 onto my computer using firewire. I noticed that in Premiere the footage looks smooth as it were played back on a television. No interlaced lines are visible. When I open the same dv avi file using Windows Media Player 6.4/7/8/9, it plays back with all the interlaced lines visible. The motion is blurred similar to film motion or a slower shutter speed. What causes this?
Thanks |
Hmm, Gerald, we probably need some more info. The replay you saw on Premiere may be the 50% reduced version that would hide some interlacing artifacts; or you may have filtered or changed settings that would affect the picture. Your encoder/decoder match up could be an issue with WMP. How does the video look when played directly to your TV using the RCA jacks or S video output from the camera? What settings did you use in each of the programs you mentioned?

gl2 and premiere 6.5 questions
hello everybody,
i'm using a canon gl2 as a record/edit deck on a fairly generic pc running windows xp (384mb ram, p3 800, latest updates). i have a few questions when i'm capturing clips from the gl2, the capture screen in premiere will suddenly turn black after capturing perhaps 4-5 clips, and even though i can still control the deck, i cannot see or capture footage onto the computer. i am using a pyro 1394 card, and have a 60gb firewire drive (not in use) on one port, and the camera on the other. any suggestions? i was using premiere 6.5 on a dell inspiron and a single chip panny last year with no problems. another problem which i have always experienced with premiere on different computers and installations, occurs when i am scrubbing through a clip to set the in points and outpoints before i put them in the timeline. at first i can scrub with no problem, but it eventually it becomes very slow and quirky, requiring me to restart premiere. thanks for reading! harry |
