Student-Proof Cable Management
an article by Ross Jones

As an educator in charge of seven XL1's and plenty of students who use them, I figured out a cool and cheap way to use the XL1 shoulder pad & strap for cable protection. This will not work with an MA-100 (Canon XLR mic unit), so assume an audio mixer is nearby. This very easy to build and will go together quickly. It will also put to work two things that came with your XL1 that you hardly ever use... the SP-100 shoulder pad and the carrying strap. Hopefully the pictures are worth a few words:

  1. Remove four screws holding soft rubber from SP-100.
  2. Cut shoulder strap to short length (about 4 inches).
  3. Dig through strap to make screw holes and attach.
  4. Run the strap up through the normal strap hole.
  5. Buy right angle RCA plugs and appropriate cables.
  6. You can get these at Radio Shack, catalog numbers:
    • 278-256b
    • 278-260a
    • 42-2651
  7. Use excess strap to provide the cables shock relief.
  8. Make sure to use a good quality Gaffers tape.
  9. Cover can be easily removed by unscrewing SP-100.
