High Speed Apple ProRes 422

Dear Friends,

Yesterday, I posted information in the DVInfo.net Industry News Section that directly applies to Sony FS700 / FS7+XDCA users.

While our Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7Q+, with our FS700/FS7 Recording Option, have been able to record 2K Raw at 100/120/200/240 fps, we were not previously been able to record these High Speed modes into the popular Apple ProRes 422 Codec.

But, we had lots of requests from the FS700 community to add this feature.
After 10 months of work, we released this feature yesterday.

-----

For a long while, until April of this year, we were never certain if we could actually implement High Speed Apple ProRes, due to the extreme amount of calculations required. No other on-camera device in the world has accomplished 240 frames per second so far, as far as we know.

Many would think, that if one was recording 240 frames per second, one would actually have to encode 240 frames per second, as this is very logical. But, each and every frame has to meet a very tough standard, where each frame has to be + or - 10% of the Target Bit Rate for each frame.

Thus, we sometimes have to actually encode far more than 240 frames per second.

-----

This 2015.8 firmware version also includes the ability to record 4K at 50 fps and 60 fps (of course, actually 59.94 fps, as this is what the camera delivers) in 4K and Ultra-HD Apple ProRes 422.

All of this High Speed Modes are available in Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Regular, and LT, so one can trade off some image quality for longer record times.

But, even in the highest quality mode, HQ, one gets far longer recording times than when recording in Raw (CinemaDNG), and only needs one SSD for these recording modes.

These new features are very significant, as they simplify the workflow, increase the recording time, and for those in certain countries, add the important ability to record at 50 fps in 4K/ Ultra-HD Apple ProRes 422.

We also added a very capable Color Vectorscope.

Here is the link to the more informative post in the Industry News Section:

And we have additional major features in progress for our next firmware release.

Respectfully,

Odyssey Firmware Patch Release v2015.8 (1098)

This firmware patch release addresses specific issues related to 4K/UHD Apple ProRes recording in the previous firmware update (v2015.8).

And this release corrects audio sync issues in FS7/FS700 4K RAW to Apple ProRes

Convergent Design recommends all customers immediately update their Odyssey7Q/Odyssey7Q+ to this latest firmware.
