no replacement for a really supportive support@adobe.com --- there is no

Remember our discussions of 720p? Here's some PR from Pana. I saw sample
footage last week at Pana and it was great!
Dreamtime Holdings Inc. which last year struck a agreement with NASA to
provide HDTV production and post-production services to the space
agency, has purchased Panasonic’s AJ-HDC27A 30fps/60fps dual frame rate
progressive scan (720p) DVCPRO HD camcorder and AJ-HD150 DVCPRO HD
studio VTR.
Last week, the AJ-HDC27A was deployed to record the launch of STS98 from
the Kennedy Space Center.
The AJ-HDC27A’s three 2/3" IT CCDs feature 1280 x 720 effective pixel
resolution and an on-chip lens system, providing high sensitivity of F10
at 2000 lux and excellent smear immunity. By recording on DVCPRO HD’s
high-density 1/4-inch tape, the AJ-HDC27A provides 46 minutes of
high-quality HD images with 720p scanning lines at a 100Mbps video
recording rate.

Steve,
Interestingly enough there is a sister product to the AJ-HDC27 called the
HCD24 and it is a multiple frame rate 720P camcorder, so that if the shooter
wishes to undercrank or overcrank the 24P camcorder, they can. I saw this
one in the lab last week and it was equally cool.

Great,
So now I can start on a whole new set of problems...
Don't want to sound negative here, but matrox support has been going down
the tube in the last little while. They were really present on their forum
at first, but have not kept up with it in the last little while.
There has been a number of reported bugs in MVT2 which were not addressed in
their latest service pack. Feels (please correct me if I am wrong(hoping to
be corected))that Matrox wants to push ahead with new products but not fully
fix the bugs that will invariably be present with every new driver releases.

Matrox is very excited to let you know that a new version of the
MEGA Pack software, which brings Windows 2000 support to the RT2000,
will be made available as a Preview Release (Open Beta) to all registered
RT2000 users on our website this coming Monday, February 19th.
In the meantime, here are a few details about some of the new features
that MEGA Pack 3.0 will bring to the RT2000.
Windows 2000 Support
-----------------------
MEGA Pack 3.0 supports Windows 2000, which allows you to take advantage of
dual-processing power, critical in those times in which you want to use
software-based effects within Adobe Premiere. Windows 2000 features
superior network management -- ideal in environments for when you need to
share and distribute video files to many systems, such as the
classroom setting. The Windows 2000 NTFS file structure brings you
better file management, unlimited file sizes, and full video file
compatibility with Matrox DigiSuite LX and DigiSuite DTV.
More realtime Flex3D effects
-----------------------
* You now have the ability to use over 60 of Adobe Premiere's native
transition effects in real time. This means that the effects that you
were accustomed to rendering for many years, can now be played back
in real time! You don't need to learn how to use new effects -- just
drag-and-drop as usual. With the addition of this feature, Matrox
RT2000 becomes the first non-linear editing system to support such
an extensive set of Adobe Premiere's features in real time.
* Realtime 3D tiles are now available as filters, giving you even
more creative flexibility with this unique class of effects.
* Realtime keyframeable cropping can now be applied to all Matrox video
effects in real time. For example, you can apply a distortion effect
to only a small area of the screen, and dynamically position this
blurred area to hide someone's face.
* Realtime keyframeable colorization lets you to adjust the brightness,
contrast, and the red, green, blue, and alpha components, or
create the negative image of a clip in real time. Create special
effects like sepia toning, purple haze, or simulate life on the
planet Mars.
Widescreen 16:9 Editing
-----------------------
Widescreen video can be captured, edited, and output in 16:9 format.
If you want to display widescreen 16:9 footage on a standard 4:3
screen, you can use a keyframeable 2D DVE to position your footage
so that the area of interest is in the center of the screen, as is
done with Pan & Scan.
Matrox MediaTools
-----------------
Matrox MediaTools is a robust, fully-featured DV capture application
that allows you to perform automatic, unattended DV tape scanning
and batch capture. Because Matrox MediaTools is fully automated,
you can save hours and hours of tedious logging and capturing time
that you can instead dedicate to editing. With MediaTools you can:
* Automatically scan the entire DV tape and create a batch capture
list of scenes.
* Automatically scan and capture clips to disk from a DV tape.
* Recapture clips from a batch capture list at a later time, delete
clips on disk, or manually adjust the In and Out points of each item
prior to capturing.
* Export the entire contents of the batch capture list directly into
an Adobe Premiere project.
* Grab single-frame TGA images and AVI clips, to create photo montage
sequences. With single-frame AVI clips, you can apply realtime
effects to your stills without requiring file conversions, and
without the need to render.
* Use VTR functions to quickly and easily view clips stored on your
hard disk, or to control your video camera.
Enhanced Adobe Premiere 6.0 Support
--------------------------
Major new productivity features you'll enjoy with Adobe Premiere
6.0 on Matrox RT2000 include:
* A professional, multichannel audio mixer and VU meters that
can be used to control audio levels as your watch your
synchronized video.
* The ability to drag-and-drop all video effects directly onto
clips and edit them with a single click. This brings quick and
convenient control over all aspect of your video effects,
including all Matrox realtime plug-ins.
* Enhanced web output support so you can produce streamable
versions of your finished projects more quickly, directly from
the Adobe Premiere Timeline.
Other Product Enhancements
---------------------------
A new memory architecture has been implemented that will allow
users with systems limited to 64 MB of AGP aperture to benefit
from ALL of the RT2000 features, including exporting to MPEG2-IBP.
With Matrox RT2000 MEGA Pack 3.0, your editing experience is
even more pleasurable with rock-solid and dependable software
that is compatible with a greater number of DV and analog devices.
Our biggest concern when we created this 3.0 software update was to
bring the RT2000 to a level of stability and functionality that has no
equivalent in this price range on the market and we believe that this has
been achieved with MEGA Pack 3.0. We are now very anxious to let you
try this Preview Release and give you the opportunity to help us iron out
the few remaining issues before the final 3.0 release.

Yes. The XL1 allow 4 channels of audio in 12-bit mode. A typical
configuration is ambient sound from the camcorder mic on the Stereo 1
pair (ch 1 and 2) and external mics to the Stereo 2 pair (ch 3 and 4).
You can get all 4 audio channels at the same time from the XL1's 4
analog audio output jacks. Thus you could capture channel 3 and 4 with a
sound card if your video capture card will not do it from the firewire.
With the VCR you probably have a selection where you could go back and
play audio channels 3 and 4 and capture them fromthe analog outputs.
Whether or not you can grab all 4 chanels over firewire depends on your
video capture system. Some only allow 2 channels, others allow you to
grab all four. The issue here is usually with the catpure card and its
drivers. You have to read the specs of the system you have or are
considering to determine its capability. For example, one can set
Dazzle/FAST's DV.now (which shipped with Premiere 5.1c) to grab two or
four cahnnels. The sound is stored as separate .WAV files for each
channel! Cool for editing/mixing.

I found the learning (training) curve quite difficult. I actually get
much better results by using the glidecam upside down. Anyone else noticed
this?
I got a promo video from glidecam where the guy actually run with the
camera. I suppose he was using a body pod for those shots.
Before purchasing, I compared the steadicam with the glidecam. Glidecam is
built more rugged. The gimble assembly on the steadicam is made of plastic
while the glidecam is metal.
With the glidecam it helps a lot is your camera is equipment with a flip out
LCD.

Hi Bob,
I bought a PC100 at Christmas after doing some comparison research and here's what I found:
1. PC110 was almost $800US more money...a factor for we poor boys.
2. The PC110 has a built in flash that pops up in photo mode...nice, but I got the Sony HVL-FDH3 Video Flash Light and like using it. Plugs into the Intelligent Hot Shoe and does some
really neat things out to about 20 feet or so.
3. The PC110 transfers stills off the memory stick via USB...probably much faster than the Serial transfers on my PC100 (they are quite slow).
4. The PC110 has a special "t" coating on the lense...how much of this is hype I couldn't say because I haven't done a side by side 100 to 110 comparison. I did buy a UV filter for my
PC100 and find little fault with the pictures.
I do believe that's about it. Same mega chip/resolution and s/n, no improvement in video or still quality. Same size etc. As I've said before, I'm already saving for the PC3000 (a 3 chip
version of the PC100 I hear is coming someday ;-) and the $800 I saved buying the 100 instead of the 110 got me off to a great start.

There seems to be a lot of trashing of Pinnacle going around. I have
several of their products. When the DV-500 and the RT-2000 came out, I
really wrestled with the decision of which to get. I had a better feeling
about Pinnacle and went with my gut and bought a DV-500. We have been very
satisfied with it, and the combination of Win 2000 and the new Premiere 6
has made this a great, stable, very strong editing system. I know there are
feature benefits and differences, but reality is that if you are not working
TODAY on 2000 and Prem 6 you are working at a handicap.
I am so so glad I made the choice to buy the DV-500 when both boards were
first launched.

Unfortunately the year end holiday seams to have extended well into the new
year for Matrox support. I'm not sure if this is cultural (like the long
summer holidays taken in Europe) or just bad planning.

This is actually not the case. Matrox had been working aggressively on MVT
2 and Premiere 6 certification and Win2K support. These are not new
products, but improvements to the existing RT2000. Improvements that all
RT2000 owners get for FREE!
In the 4th quarter of last year they realized that they could only
accomplish two of the three tasks quickly. They chose MVT 2.0 and Premiere
6. All the while MVT 3.0 and Win2K support has been under continuous,
aggressive development. They have been listening to bug reports and working
hard to incorporate the fixes into the new MVT 3.0. They have also been
taking their Premiere 6 certification and expanding it to unlock new
real-time features within Premiere.
Do we wish Matrox could produce more fixes, faster, of course we do. But
since the beginning they have been constantly improving the RT2000.
Do we wish that the RT2000 was more stable and easier to install, IT IS!
MVT 2.0 was a major leap forward. With 3.0 the AGP aperture setting is no
longer an issue, meaning more motherboards will be fully supported. Now
that we can use Win2K, I think yuo will find the stability of the RT2000 to
take another leap ahead.
Wait until you get a chance to play with these new features. You will love
them!

access stations. Beyond that, we're looking for ideas or info for
distribution. Thanks.

Greetings,
I've got a chance to buy a sony C-76 mic, used, with the sony zepplin and

He's asking $500 for the package. It's a condenser mic with a narrow
pattern. Has anyone here experience with this mic? How does it compare
with a 416?
I'll be using it mainly outside for on the fly interviews and doc work with
a sound tech.
One of the appealing features is it can be either battery or phantom
powered, although I know the batteries are kind of hard to find, I know a
good source....

The Adaptec AHA-8940 is an obsolete board that will not have any future
support for new Operating Systems or applications. The best choice for
stability in the low cost area has been the Canopus DVRaptor with Premiere
5.1c. With Premiere 6 just having been released many of the OHCI compatible
Firewire (IEEE1394) boards are supported directly out of Premiere. I'd look
at one of those solutions rather than to invest time and money into an
unsupported product. If you choose the OHCI boards you will also need to
upgrade to at least Windows 98 SE.

Actually I'll gladly install the Beta version and see if it makes the RT2000
acceptable for my needs. Up till now it hasn't been better than my previous

Exactly. That why The MARzPAK=81 is the BEST solution.
You get great shots for HOURS not a couple of minutes.
You can hang MORE weight off the bottom for even better stabilization
if you'd like, but since your ARMS become the stabilizing
weight, the pak helps support them too. For the PD-150
you'll spend just under $400 for a complete pak _delivered_ in the US.

That's what Sony has in mind for this feature on the PC110....

In a message dated 2/15/01 12:41:58 AM, yakkei2@nyc.rr.com writes:
<< Um... hate to sound completely clueless here, but what is color correction
and why is it needed? >>
Color correction is just part of "printing" the film, just as you would print
a color photograph from a negative. It is called color timing. Some of it
is to make adjustments, but most of it is necessary to print the scene as it
was orginally shot. No process, chemical or electronic maintains absolute
true color through successive steps of production. Color correction is also
important to maintain continuity, especially if various shots in a scene or
sequence are done at different times of the day or even on different days.
In film, it is a matter of using "light valves" with dichroic filters to
balance the red-green-blue components. This also adjusts density
(brightness). Most stuff shot on film these days goes to video and the
corrections are made as the megative is transferred to video. The telecine
operator is formally called a "colorist." Even when this is done, a final
color correction is done in what is called the "tape-to-tape" also known as a
"video sweetening" (as in audio sweetening). This has become a standard part
of the process and is most often done in digital Beta. (Desktop production
often does this in the NLE or After Effects or similar software.)
As someone else mentioned, seeing the before and after can be amazing. Even
though the overall corrections may be fairly subtle, it is a constant
reminder of the power of color.
The newest trend in feature films is called Digital Intermediate. This is
where (as was done on Gladiator) the film is scanned into digital,
corrections and special effects are done electronically and the video is
printed back to film for projection. Even though digital projection appears
to now be feasible, it will take many years to completely change over the
thousands of theaters and projection rooms worldwide. There is considerably
more you can do to alter an image digitally, as there is so much more you can
do in Photoshop than you can do in a color darkroom.
Most of what you see in films like Gladiator and Seven, for example, is pure
old fashioned film and lab technique. The digital process is primarily for
effects but this is changing with Digital Intermediates, which replace the
old inter-positive and inter-negative stages.
Video maniuplation of the image has been the standard in commercials for
quite some time, however most or all of it is still done at the time of the
photography. If you look closely you can even tell what filters they are
using on most commercials.

The SteadyTracker is worth a look. I chose it after checking out=

Since I don't know the content, nor the production itself, there's no way
for me to have an opinion. Even if I had one, I'd keep it to myself (at
least on DV-L).
The tarring and feathering pertains to, and I repeat, any "political

Some of us Canadians and many others around the world do not hang our
head in shame, in fact, its a bit re-afirmation of a rediculous fiasco
to watch a president being appointed by the supreme court in a
democracy(which in itself is a sham). Perhaps the shame you feel is
misdirected and rather *projected* outward toward those whoe wish to be
heard. In a democracy, freedom of speech should reign supreme, and the
people have a right to know.
I grew up in west Berlin Germany with ancestry in east Germany, and this
sort of collusion in politics is all too familiar...but that was in
fascism and communism..but then those are dirty words in america.

Not all the Steadicam comments specify a model. There are many models, of
which two are "low end." One is the Steadicam Jr and the other is the
Steadicam DV.
I tried a Jr with a PD150 + Canon WA58 + FP960 battery + Lightwave Minimount
+ AT4073 + LW Equalizer. Forget it -- the rig was much too heavy for it.
Also, I didn't think that the Jr was very well made.
The DV is better -- carbon fiber -- but I'm sure it's not as durable as a
metal stabilizer.
The PD150 ++ rig does work with the DV, though; I shot with that combination
in the field last month. It wasn't my favorite combination but it *did*
work and I got the kind of shots I was looking for. The main problem I had
(apart from fatigue, but I had spent time literally "training" my arms &
back to hold the rig) was the problem that all LCD screens have -- outside,
in sun, forget it. Sometimes I could only glimpse some outlines and had to
point the camera where I thought it ought to be pointed. This often worked.
I haven't used the other stabilizers, so I can't compare. About all I can
say, with confidence, is that the DV will handle a PD150 plus accessories
well enough. I'm sure a vest/arm combo would be better, but the bare rig is
pretty good as is.
The trick would be to try out these stabilizers if possible, and then
decide. I'm sure they all do the job -- you need to learn what one suits
your body & your style, if you can.

It's nice to know there is still an independent voice out there amidst the clutter of corporate media. Whether you agree with their ideas or not this is very important that another voice
or many voices exist in this landscape or else we give up our rights to free speech. At the same time we are responsible for what we say so that we are not irresponsible in our speech but
this must observed by any side in a conversation.
I would love to see this piece where could I find it since I live in LA.

This is most likely caused by the 32kHz sampling. Because of the sampling
frequency 32kHz is far enough away from the video to lose it occasionally.
Reliability is improved at 48kHz, even if you are working in DV and the
audio is unlocked, there are fewer problems at this sampling frequency than
at 32kHz. I would say the longer the shot, the more likely this might come
into play.

I would definitely suggest contacting someone who a) knows Arabic and
b) has a computer which is set up for Arabic. Get them to do the
translation and typeset the titles for you - either get them to
create a TIFF or even just give you a printout which you can scan in
if necessary. Even if you get the appropriate software, if you can't
read Arabic you're not going to know if you've typed things in
correctly, got punctuation or endings in the right place, etc. etc.
And you certainly don't want to make the mistake of displaying titles
back to front or upside down - get expert assistance!
-Rolf
PS. Macs have long had system support for other world scripts but
obviously the same sort of thing is available for PCs as well. In
either case, I believe you need to install special system software,
not just the fonts.

Sorry to hear that, but I'm not greatly surprised. An 8500 probably
is slightly too old a machine. Although you may be able to use CatDV
with less, the recommended minimum requirements are really a G3 or P2
with 64Mb of memory.
There are a few things you can try though. If you're using an old
copy of MRJ it's probably worth downloading the latest version from
Apple's web site, as 2.2.3 (I believe) introduced several performance
improvements. You might also want to experiment with virtual memory
settings to see what works best for you. Obviously, if memory is an
issue make sure you're not running any other applications at the same
time. Finally, make sure you're using a recent version of CatDV (the
latest version is 1.5.2) as there have been significant bug fixes
since 1.0.
If you have any other specific problems such as crashes while using
CatDV, please email support@squarebox.co.uk and we'll do our best to
help.

Humph I can see the problem ---
I hate to bring an alternative perspective but the last thing I want to do
when replying in a hurry (which is my usual state) is to trawl through a
posting to find the bottom of it and cut it off ..
Frankly the extra bandwidth is neglible and the inconvenience considerable..
Also the last thing I want to do is to re-read the commercials -- I think
they will be the only ones to benefit from such a dictate.
I agree the aesthetics are horrible but I trust we will not get this into a
tarring and feathering threat -- it would seem to me to be a bit over the
top in the authoritarian direction

Hi Blain,
Well the one we had in the lab went from 3 frames to 60. I think the
factory will nail it down to a more set number but we are still in the stage
that it is influential as to the final design. We are asking the factory to
leave it as it is. Now the cool part of this is that the video is still
recording at 60 frames but the key frames are tagged as key frames, and the
various HD NLE will be able to detect these in the User Bits. There are
major advantages to recording in this manner and the first is that the only
special equipment required is the camera, standard HD monitoring is fine
and the DVCPROHD studio machine is also useable today. So far the reaction
to it has been very favorable.
Best regards,
Jan

are not espousing a political ideology or POV, just announcing you finished
a production, the title and where you can see it.
The member in Austin, TX who seems to have a better idea of what our rights

Just curious then, how much would it cost if I bought a second hand system

I have to admit to spending half of the eighties on the phone giving support

from "end users".
At times I felt abit end used myself. I did get the absolute classic call
from the elderly lady who asked why the VCR LED display was so fuzzy-looking
(pull off the transparent film that protects the glass).
On the other hand, they had me giving user advice to our laptop customers
(the first dos ones, dual floppies for storage) starting with one day of
training under my belt.
So I've got plenty of empathy for the phone people, usually understaffed and
undersupported, with too little data to work with. Plenty of empathy
until,of course, I've got a problem.

This sounds like a "blonde" story, but the guy swears it is true:
A friend of mine worked in a major pro camera store. A customer telephoned
after vacation and asked what was wrong with her expensive new camera
because none of the pictures were any good.
My friend started with the usual suspects: "Does the light meter needle
appear to be moving?"
Customer says, "Just a minute - I'll be right back."
After an extraordinary amount of time, the customer confirmed, "Yes, the
light meter is moving."
Salesman: "What does the light meter say?"
Customer: "Just a minute..." Another long wait. Finally, customer reports,
"12309875654".
Salesman: "What??? Are you sure?"
Customer: "Just a minute..." Another even longer wait. Customer confirms,
"Yes, 12309875654".
Eventually my friend figured out that his customer was not reading the
"light meter" on the camera. The customer was reading the meter on her
electrical utility service pole.

G'day Jason,
I've just been going through that dilemna and finally settled on a $15-00 wheelchair hire from the local pharmacy with soft tyres. Not quite the versatility of a steadycam but in many circumstances makes a real cheap dolly-with-tracks.

G'day Charles,
I was looking at your machine and wondering; the plate at the bottom seems to stick way out towards the operator; doesn't this get in the way ?
Also looks like a _real strong and steady arm_ is required and this must transfer some shake or movement to the bar and camera, no?

Subject: Re: Color Timing
Message-ID: <3A8C5808.D9C82AEB@ix.netcom.com>
Color Timing refers to the scene to scene color correction applied
during the printing or duplication of motion picture film. Each scene is
timed and the appropriate correction adjustments are applied for the
duration of that scene. It is also necessary to apply image density
adjustments from scene to scene to maintain density at the center of the
usable straight-line portion of the sensitometric curve of the film
stock.
Color Balance usually refers to the use of filters on a motion picture
camera to match the color temperature of the light to that expected by
the mp film in the camera.
In the early days of color video (the '50's) the term was also used for
what we now generally call white balance. Early color video cameras were
not self contained. The thing mounted on the tripod (or pedestal) was an
image tube and lens with a few driver circuits. The electronics that
told the camera tube what to do were mounted in a rack in another room.
The whole thing we now call a camera was then called a camera chain. The
phase relationship (and color burst frequency) between camera chains had
to be maintained with delay lines and the like. This process of
adjustment was called "color timing". I suspect the choice of this term
for video was a carry-over from film production. Most of early color
video was produced on color film and converted to video by a tele-cine
unit.
If you have lived only in the era of all solid-state self contained
video, consider yourself lucky. The early stuff was a difficult,
expensive bitch.
Hope this helps Mike

What is the origin of the term "color timing"?

Sorry folks another reminisce!
Way back when, I used to travel a lot in The Middle East and so I thought it
would be cool to have an Arabic business card. I happen to visit Cairo so I
got my taxi driver to take me to a small printer where between the 3 of us
we translated the content, but most of it had to be phonetic because they
didn't have any technical words. I called in to pick them up on my way out
to the Airport, and he had several hundred cards laid out in the sun to dry!
Every time I gave one away it raised a smile and I worried for months that
they had put some rude words or something on them!
Another time in Damascus I ran out of visa photographs, and I got some taken
in a studio with the biggest plate camera I've ever seen. It was all made
from wood, leather and brass and the finished result was superb. I got 100
copies and the whole deal cost me $20!

You need Sorenson pro to get the full control and filtering to remove
blockiness.
Try using H263 instead - set quality to max, keyframe rate to 20000,
bitrate where you want it and compress away. At high bitrates it
looks like MPEG-1; it tends to get soft at low bitrates rather than
blocky.
You could also try Sorenson 3, which is included in QuickTime 5

Message-ID:
Had to run out to work this morning, did a quick search on "Ramseeker.com",
and bought a 256meg. ram chip for my new PB G-4. $83.00/ *$116.00 total with
tax from NJ to NY, Standard overnight FedEx at this online address:
http://www.18004memory.com/
"Coast to Coast Memory"
QUESTION TO RAM/APPLE EXPERTS:
The woman that I spoke to on the phone, said she was familiar with the new
PB and said she had one. When she read me the Ram part order she said
"PC-133". I said all the specs on all the web pages say: "PC-100". She said
the chips were backward compatible. I went ahead with the order, but am now
having second thoughts since I don't know if this could be a "bad thing". I
looked all over the Internet again tonight, most decent Ram selling sites
that even list the new PB G-4 memory, all say PC-100, I did not see ONE chip
that said PC-133.
Can anyone shed some light on this subject? Will I damage my computer, can
it possibly slow it down. Is she correct that PC-133 chips are the same or
backward compatible?
Granted I was in a hurry, but why does this always happen to me?
Thanks all!
